Fooling around with a new tune
Kicking around some ideas for some movie cues I'm working on and I strung together this ZZ Top type groove with a little Eric Johnson flavor.

That was awesome! And now I'm following you on SoundCloud! And now the great mystery (for me anyway) of who Captain Strings is has been solved! A name and a face to go with the mental picture of the awesome Captain Strings. Thanks for sharing this! I'll be listening to your stuff on Soundcloud for a good while. Thanks!

Re: Fooling around with a new tune
Not sure that it really reminded me of Eric Johnson at all, but it was really cool! Definite bit of ZZ there, pretty distinct sounds I thought! Movie placements, eh? That's awesome! Thanks for sharing, man!

Re: Fooling around with a new tune
o.k. so i'm always saying cool but that was cool@ 1 min. tada! wana do some movie music and my crazy girlfriend has finallay pulled the plug on voice-over and I SAID I WOULD SUPPORT HER AND SHOW HER HOW to set all the shit up to send stuff to L.A. Whoops! Don't have a clue. I know how to build an isolation booth but i don't know Audacity. Yipes! Keep the tunes comin', dude, the future is us old fucks and if we ever forget that they are gonna bury us.

Re: Fooling around with a new tune
For doing this kind of work you need a DAW that will play back QuickTime video files and lock them up to midi and audio like Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase or Digital Performer which is the one I use. It takes a fast powerful rig with 2 or 3 monitors an lotsa RAM. You also kinda need to live in a town where this kind of work is done so you can meet the right people. And yeah most of the cues i compose are dead simple and one minute or less. Most of the time in the finished product it's chopped up, looped, pushed way down and someone is talking over it. It doesn't pay much at the level I'm on which is indie documentaries, direct to Netflix features and a few commercials but you DO get paid and those little quarterly BMI checks can add up.

Re: Fooling around with a new tune
Yep. You will need a powerful computer, a pro DAW, a pro interface and a good monitoring system. Being in a town where music is actually worth something is absolutely critical too...
