Although it doesn't hurt having a nice mid-range priced bass like a Schecter lying around either.
I just saw the Schecter Stiletto Studio 6 Bass is about 900 and has 3 band eq.

Hi Steven thanks for that thought. It brings me nearer to the NSStick side. I´m playing my 5 String Warwick fretless since 2002 and there is nothing compareable to that Greetings gerald
At the time I had a four string Thumb fretless, I did try a five string equivalent at a different store, liked the five better but it was another $1500 more. What I do miss from Warwick was the active /passive switch with eq defeat. You get a solid tone with no noise with eq defeat. Their electronics are really good.
Keep in mind you can typically resell an NS close to what you pay for, Warwicks I can find off the shelf, so resale on a new one is riskier getting back what you payed for if you don't like it.

My Question: Has anyone played all 3 instruments (Bass, NS Stick, TG) and can compare them? Why TG: They are interesting for me because they are produced 500km away from my home and not 15000km (Service, Taxes etc)....
lg Gerald
I totally blew past this question, While I have NOT played a TG. I do however have a modified bass that I strung up with a 7 string guitar bridge and basically used "Crafty tuning" 5ths up until the highest 2 strings etc.. I tried playing this for about 3 months and asked the question again .. "Do I really want to commit to playing in 5ths bass going from low to high ala Markus Reuter?" My answer was NO, so it just sits in my closet. It was really a project to keep my mind steady after losing my Father!

Re: Bass vs NS Stick vs Touchguitar
I'm seriously considering getting a NS/Stick, and I can't make up my mind on the tuning. Do most/all NS/Stickers go with the 8-string tuning in fourths that pretty much looks like a standard 8-string bass tuning, or does anyone use fifths and the "standard" Stick inverse strings and tunings?
What I'm really getting at, as a keyboardist turned Stickist turned bassist, I have no special bond with fourths and really like the fifths tuning on my Sticks. But I think I'd like an NS/Stick in fifths. But maybe not.
I guess it's the age-old newb question about what tunings to start in, but with NS/Stick. I know Don Schiff started on "regular" Stick before going over to NS/Stick and I believe fourths standard tuning. Is it hard to go back and forth from Stick fifths to NS fourths?
I should probably lurk on Dean's channel more. I'm sure these questions have been asked and answered before.

Re: Bass vs NS Stick vs Touchguitar
I would not want an NS tuned in fifths. Gary mentioned something about using a Stick tuning on the NS, I recall someone else on this board doing that also. Since I also have a Grand, I have something that's tuned that way. I also fingerpick and use a pick on the NS, so keeping a bass or guitar-like tuning in fourths or alternate tuning I prefer. I would not be happy having less strings tuned like a normal Stick. If you are talking straight fifths, I'm not sure that's possible with eight strings.
One disadvantage of having the lowest bass string in the middle of the neck is I would not be able to slap it like a normal bass guitar.

Hi Steve! Come to the Dark Side!
A great resource is Gary Jibilian. You can get through to him on his website. www.garyjibilian.com He has been playing with the idea of getting the NS/Stick with the inverted fifth on the bass side. Plus he works at SE...
Don seems to be able to switch between Stick and NS/Stick pretty seamlessly... but he is a freak of nature...

Thanks, Steve! That makes a lot of sense. I've been watching NS/Stick videos all day, and I really like the expressiveness that you can get, like this:
And I'd like to be able to do all that stuff that Don does (in about 45 years or so!)
I think I'll go in straight fourths all the way across, if I pull the trigger on one. Thanks!

Good points, Dean, but it occurs to me that if I stay in straight fourths, then all the bass literature of the world is then available to me.
And like Steve/MIchNS says, I've got other Sticks tuned in fifths if I want to do that. I'm usually pretty good at code switching from one instrument to the other, as long as I don't actually have to read music or juggle multiple clefs. But I do like my bass in fifths, now. But I can adapt, as I see Steve Balogh do with his multiple 4th/5th Sticks.

Re: Bass vs NS Stick vs Touchguitar
If you get an NS, I also recommend buying Muriel Anderson's "50 RH Techniques You Must Know" DVD. Learning fingerpicking/classical guitar instruction works wonders on an NS. Steve Osborn, one of his former instructors, and several guitar seminars I've taken at Interlochen has me picking the NS more like a guitar player than what I did previously from bass. Even though the left hand will not always work the same way as a guitar player because of the neck width and scale length, the RH techniques help with developing some finess with fingerpicking and picking an NS.
