Free Hands Friday #70 Bach!
And there it is. Free Hands Friday #70 Bach to Basics!
Let's talk about playing Bach on the Chapman Stick. We'll talk about some pieces we've heard by other players BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY - let's play Bach!
We'll do this over the course of a few sessions, but to start, let's start with something we all know - The Minuet in G Major. Performances of the Minuet in G can be found all across internet land, along with sheet music and tabs. Post your faves here.
Oh, AND Free Hands Friday is going to be a doozy! Friday, February 19 I will be onsite at Stick Enterprises to talk to Emmett about the Patch of Shades! If you want to be a part of either of these drop a line here and I will make certain you get an invite.
Free Hands Friday #70: Bach to Basics pt. 1, Friday, February 12, 12pm PDT Free Hands Friday #71: Making Shade, Friday, February 19, 12pm PDT

Re: Free Hands Friday #70 Bach!
Great idea, Gene!!! I doubt I can attend, but I'll be looking forward to when it hits Youtube. I've actually been working on this piece for a couple of months now, as it happens, off of one of those piano scores you mentioned being out there. Not a great deal of refinement in what I can play of it so far, but I'm into the second half of the score. (At one point, I actually considered transposing it a fret or two for a moment, until I realized that I'd need to rename it. ) Were you aware that it's been determined that it was not written by Bach? Though, its presence in the notebook of Bach's wife could make it a "Bach" piece anyway, after a fashion.

Re: Free Hands Friday #70 Bach!
Most think Christisn Petzold wrote the minuette and the claims of Bachs wife writing the cello suites is highly controversial. Most experts deny these claims regardless of theories in documentaries

Re: Free Hands Friday #70 Bach!
Bach was not a genius, but a collective soul. He borrowed heavily from traditional hymns and chorale work. He transcribed other's music for organ and harpsichord so it really comes as no surprise when I hear that there is some speculation about the authenticity of his work. People may genuinely have a point that he did not compose a piece that he is credited for, but it's fanboy hearsay at this point (i'm one to speak...). He made the effort to write it down, and that has its merits. You can read all about it on the many wikis out there on his work or listen to guy's like Clive Titmuss go off on it, which I have come to actually really enjoy (<- sad lonely man, me not him). Especially the studies on his pieces for lute as there is a lot of speculation about the natural key it was written for. It's fascinating. It makes for good study and I think truly that is what he would appreciate most. The Minuet in G Major is a great study as it uses an AABB format and is immediately recognizable to many people's ears. Claire and I walked through this at the last NAMM show after hours at Lefty's and her delivery was nothing short of what I would expect from a Director at Berklee School of Music - excellent. She straightened me out on the tag at the end of B section. So we'll start with this one. I would love to circle back to the Bourree in E minor as well as that is a bit of Prog anthem. Matias Sorof, Josh and Greg have all done great versions of this - you can too. Having this under your belt on the Chapman Stick might not win you a new girl/boy friend, but it will definitely get a free round from the guy at the end of the bar with the Triumph Tour t-shirt (white, black sleeves, baseball jersey - you know what I am talking about....).

Hey guys, Dan had the good idea of posting Gene and Claire's great video of them playing together this last NAMM Stick Night. Such a treat to hear them! (Can't seem to embed a FB video here...) https://www.facebook.com/japhletba/vide ... 3328016196
