Does anyone know how to play the jazz standard Misty? If so, let me know what chords you are using in the left hand bass, and the key of the tune for your arrangement. I'm thinking about creating a stick version, and don't want to try overly complex chords in the left hand.
Best regards,
Mark

Re: Jazz Standard - Misty
Something like this in Eb I guess. I'm just learning it myself.
Code:
A |---------|---------|-8-------|--------| |-8-------|------8--|------8--|-----6--| |:-----8--|-8-------|---------|-6------| |-10---10-|-9----10-|-10---10-|-9---8--| |-10---10-|-11---9--|-8----8--|-7---7--|
Thank you for your response Paul. I'm pretty sure I can find the right hand melody in already existing scores and modify it as needed to work on the stick.
What I'm more interested in is a bass pattern for the left hand. I've consulted some "fake" books online, and found some fairly complex chords, which would make the learning process longer for me. See chords below for the first starting bars of the song. Is there a way to simplify it so my brain doesn't have to think as much on my left hand?
You can always drop the extensions, so the 9 and 13 chords you listed can all become plain old 7 chords. The lead sheet I was looking at on jazzstudies.us is written this way and the voicings I used are all basic shell voicings (no fifth included). Those shapes will get you through almost every jazz tune if you get them down (shell voicings for M7, m7, 7, m7b5 with roots on the C and G strings).
Of course you can always simplify down to playing only the roots, which is what Erroll Garner seems to have wanted from his bass player on this tune. In that case you'd just play the lowest notes on my tab. I included a few passing tones in the bass line where I felt like the harmony needed it, but they can be left out. Two notes per bar in the A section and 4 notes per bar in the B section, although I didn't write the B section that way. Personally I'd throw in an occasional third or seventh to fill out the texture (one of the notes I tabbed on the A and E strings).

Brett Bottomley would be a good guy to talk to. He's a jazzbo IIRC he has a Chapman Stick Jazz FB group

That's a good idea begin. I'm a member of that jazz stick web site as well. Once I get the right hand down, I'm thinking of posting a video on there, then Steve, Brent and others may help me develop ideas for improving the left hand and develop a strategy for soloing over chords.

That's a cool walk! I did find something on Guitar Pro that will work...a jazz arrangement with both guitar and bass transcribed. I'm going to work on that version for now.
