Post Shoulder harness similar to guitar strap
Greetings!

Has anyone created a shoulder harness for a stick that allows you to wear it more diagonally like a guitar? I'm thinking this would work well with an Alto railboard. If you could avoid the belt hook it seems like it would be easier to play while sitting in a regular chair. I've tried the lap dog but didn't really like it that much.

Cheers,
Jerry

Nah.... won't work!!

Emmett spent a lot of time designing the shoulder strap and the belt hook.
Originally the belt hook was in that little curve where the neck meets the body.
In those days it had an "S" like side profile
It made the Stick sit lower and at a more guitarlike angle.
I had it moved to the body to make the playing easier for me.
Within a few years and quite independently Emmett had done the same thing with the current adjustable version.

I just couldn't leave it alone, of course....

I had a strap made up in UK a few years back, from the design of a very sincere guy on the internet. I called it a "Baldrick" which is a sash that 3 or 4 musketeers wore back in the day.....

Nah....didn't work!

The stick needs that anchor, locking it to its position on your hips. The shoulder strap also locks the playing angle. With guitars, gravity pulls 'em down into a playing position... And bass players still worry about neck-dive! The Stick will just sit there....where you put it!!

So I wouldn't bother changing anything ....if it ain't broke, as they say.....

I hope that helps!

And please let me know how the new Alto Railboard works out..... I'm still hovering on that one! The C19 lockdown has given me a bit of time to think.....

Cheers from Steve in the UK

I have a CS lapbar made by Expanding Hands. It's a really nice looking piece of wood and works like the lap dawg.

I also have an NS boomerang strap. You should try this one. You can adjust the angle to play your stick more like a guitar. There are some other guys from down-under who swear by it....must be the boomerang aspect. If you don't like it, never attempt to throw it away.... it will come back and smack you

I'm probably going to get banished forever for this but I did happen across this guy's video last year and thought I might give it a go one day...

This one actually works. Although I haven't given it a full workout yet because of my back. But it shows promise. You can bend over with this.

I seem to recall someone modifying a Steinberger Boomerang strap to be used with his Stick.

Hi McCookies!

No Banishing here!

But you've found the one I tried.

And....yes you can bend over with it, for all the rock star poses, but I found that if I didn't anchor the stick using the belt hook it flew all over the place and really felt uncomfortable.

But It was a brave attempt to try something new!

I've still got it in a draw somewhere.....it'll probably stay there getting dusty.

I tend to agree with caly..., the anchor is very important. The guy in the video has a good idea
but I think the ergonomics of long term playing would encourage him to bring the
instrument more to the center and then what is the reason for the new strap?

Don Schiff took the belt hook off and installed a regular guitar-strap setup, he wanted to rock and the belt hook got in the way. A few years later I asked him how he liked his guitar strap on the Stick and he said he changed it back :|.

Mc, don't worry you wont get banished but you can never leave ;)...

I also use a NS boomerhang for my railboard for a long time and I can't be happier.
I can play standup or seated without having to change anything... Not like with hook where you need to adjust your belt length.
The weight of the instrument is well distributed on shoulder and back, at the opposite of hook where all is supported by one point on the belt.
I can put the stick on me and remove it within a second... I always find the hook + strap inconvenient to "install".
I can set the angle of the instrument the way I want, as the boomerhang can be adjusted for this purpose.

So I know that the devoted stick fans will claim it is not coming from Emmet so it can't be good.
I would just reply... Did you have a try?
I did have and will really never come back to belt hook.
