Post New to Stick
Hi All,
I am new to stick. I found they are not available in music stores to try even. How you guys decide which one to buy? I am looking to buy one, cannot decide by looking at the youtube videos. Please let me know. I am in Sacramento, California.
Thanks
Raj

...good idea, but the world is great and wide...
...may be this is harder to realize while there are only aprox 8thousand
sticks produced by SE...

...I did it like this: for starting I tried to take the first release, the 10 string stick...
...for me thats it, IMHO as always....

Well..if you tell us where you from-maybe it’s a starting point to direct you to a nearby stickist.
and take it from there.

First...welcome to this forum...

Sacramento...you're not so far from Los Angeles and I think Stick Enterprises is there...so...Why don't you go directly to the company and see if you can try one? You're lucky to live so close...

As Alain implied, a 5.5 hr drive is not absurd to find another Stick player. You have the benefit of driving to the home of it all. I drove about that far to meet up with Greg Howard in Charlottesville. Still, there probably are some Northern Californian Stick players. Dean "Sky Diver" Kobayashi probably has organized some of them. Hopefully some of them will have something to say here.

my assessment would be that they are all are going to play really well. The thing that’s going to distinguish them the most are the different pickup types. So surf around and find some videos of different stick pickups and Listen to them . There are rail board r block pickup demos on stick.com. Bob Culbertson and Trevor Stewart have videos using the active 2 EMG pickups. Rob martino has some videos that demo the pasv pickups pretty well. And tony levin has some that will show you how the classic stickup pickup works. There are some threads that discuss the merits of 12 string vs 10 string sticks that you can find on this forum if you search a bit. My personal opinion is that a 12 string gives you a bit more range for chords on the left hand bass side with relatively little down side.

In the end all the pickups are pretty good. Personally for me I really like the active emg pickup on the melody side. But I haven’t ever tried the r block pickup.
