I switched to a Grand Stick for one reason: the ability to add another note to jazz chords with the left hand in High Bass 4th tuning.

I wanted a 12-string Grand because I wanted DBR tuning, and it's the only way to not lose too many high notes. And it turns out the bass side goes higher than the melody because of 5ths tuning. I tune to high bass 4th (or what ever the hell I want) occasionally for shits and giggles. I'm having my Ironwood worked on I'll have Classic again (and the Stickup, which I miss). I have the PASV4 and ACT2 for the Grand. My opinion is I want ALL the p.u. sounds and the more Sticks the merrier. As far as someone getting their first Stick I would get whatever I could get my grubby hands on as soon as possible. THERE IS NO WRONG CHOICE IT'S A FUCKING STICK.

Post Re: Grand Stick Players - why did you get one?
I'm in a huge conflict as to if I want a Grand Stick or not, so this thread appears at a great time.

I love my old Ironwoods [one is flatwonds, the other roundwounds as far as strings go...] but watching Trey Gunn rocking out on his custom Grand Stick during the KC tour of 1994 in Argentina makes me long for a Grand Stick in the worst way, and if that's not bad enough - there's one on Reverb right now [with no serial number....] that's for sale for 2k, and I have some Guinness in me..............

But seriously - on the other hand, I have not run out of things to do with my 10 string Ironwoods BUT when I tuned up my M.Megatar properly today - which was a breeze, all the strings went exactly to the pitches I desired which would have been essentially the Classic Stick tuning - and then I played it, I felt that I'd rather have a Grand Stick for sitting down....

[I won't go into what happened when I attempted to tune my Warr Phalanx tonight, which is set up in a very peculiar fashion - as the melody strings are on top, but set up where the thickest string is next to the thickest bass string - but nothing worked on the bass side, while melody did 5ths perfectly....]

So, I'm going to sleep on it - and if it is still for sale on Reverb tomorrow, just maybe it may come my way.

*Only thing scaring me away is no serial number - that to me is BAD....

There must be a reason it has not sold yet......

*well, as luck would have it [I always like it when choices are made for me] it sold over night, so that ends that dilemma......

But someday, I will own a Grand Stick - perhaps now was not the right time.

Meanwhile, I am anticipating an 8 string Stickbass which SE had for sale sometime this fall, and I already know that this will be a very very exciting instrument to play because of how I'm having it tuned.

So today, no Grand Stick for me....

And Big George, I've got electric upright bass envy with you. Gosh, I miss harmonic bowing!

How about bowing a cymbal? The first time anyone (including drummers) sees that one they almost shit themselves!

I own a Grand Stick because that's the auction I finally won. :) Been bidding on and losing Stick auctions for decades, one finally came through, gave the starting bid, got no competition at all, whew. Even has the hex pickup on the high side for synth access (on order). Why the Grand? Bigger's better, right? No real reason. :)
