Re: One Stick to rule them all
I get what you're saying. I just wish I could borrow a Grand for a month and really try it and compare it to my sticks. I don't feel the 10-string limiting at all, in fact there are more notes and positions that I can play. I do feel the SB8 is a bit limiting when tuned in split tuning, but that is why it was designed without any group spacing, so it can be played in a single region.
I'll probably tune it back to straight 4ths and maybe (if I find proper strings) try your crafty tuning. I'm very happy with my polycarb w/stickup and everything I can do with it. I'm glad you're happy with the NS/Stick.

Big George Waters wrote: Walt, well - not necessarily... because an 8 string instrument can be tuned much more differently than a 10 or 12... which can really open up different styles of playing - but with the case of more people seemly interested in tunings in 4ths rather than 5ths, then I suppose that the 12 would make sense. I meant with the same tuning like MR on 10 vs 12 strings. Of course, a straight tuning on the 8-strings is possible and allows you to do things that would not be possible with split tunings. Still, you can always tune a 10 or 12 strings with a straight tuning too, just with the group spacing in the middle. I think there was a post of a guy from Russia (?) playing a 10-string with straight 4ths, although strings 5 & 6 were tuned to the same pitch.

Re: One Stick to rule them all
I just thought of this based on something I read in the midi thread.... nylon strings - I would love to have a Railboard, with nylon strings and piezo pickups... but to my knowledge - no such instrument exists. *So I guess technically this comment is disqualified based on the initial rules posted, but it's still a dream of mine to someday have one put together* ...and you know, that one would probably be a 12 string instrument as well

Maybe if you ask them nicely they’ll make a grand Railboard with NyLon strings and piezo pickups. Which in my opinion, sounds... AWESOME!!! Although, I’d have it made of wood like my father’s classical guitar. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Re: One Stick to rule them all
Maybe for my 56th birthday, which is a year and a half from now... this time next year I will inquire, as they already have two instruments on order from me [the used SB-8 and the new RB-8...] but yes, a Blue Grand Stick Railboard with glow inlays, nylon strings, and piezo pick-ups....

Re: One Stick to rule them all
I feel very comfortable with 10 strings and 34", so I might stay here for a while. A friend of mine may be selling one of his sticks, so we may make a deal. Also 10-strings and 34", but with different pickup and all adjustable components. We'll see...

Re: One Stick to rule them all
I think you should try out as many as possible and pick the one that talks to your heart. I mean, every instrument has its own tone and you never know until you play it. I own three sticks but my bamboo SG12 sounds so much better than the others that I actually only use this one. The others are for backup.

Re: One Stick to rule them all
One stick to rule them all,. Is kind of silly. What instrument, or tool is the best?
Depends on the user. The instrument is only an extension of the self, it is for the individual, to express themselves.
