ii V
Something I taught/demonstrated this past weekend at the NY Stick Seminar was that many songs are based simply on ii V. That would be Dm G(7) (in C). Not necessarily resolved to the One chord. Holding Back The Years Spooky Stormy I Wish Son of Mr. Green Genes Oyo Como VA Evil Ways Many standards are ii V I. Not necessarily referring to that

always wondered when you play the ii chord how do you know it's ii and not i ? or even ii V can't i just call it i IV ?

Indeed Chameleon! Good call Ted. Boaz, that progression is both ii V in a Major key I IV in Dorian It's the same thing just depends on where the resolution might be heard.
