Big Bang 4965 - higher res version, 2003 improv by Greg
Hi everyone,
I was able to get a higher-res version of the video from Dan Chapman recently, and so it's just been posted to YouTube. I hope it makes watching it a better, less-pixelated experience.

I know this isn’t an album per se, but this definitely gets an honorable mention from me regarding that recent top 5 stick albums thread. One of my all time favorite improv performances (on any instrument!), it reminds me of Jaco’s live solo record, “Honestly”. This truly feels like a “the music was already in the room” moment, for lack of a less corny way of putting it.

As I recall this was the "Frustration Gig"? Light tapping indeed! Seriously Great. I did a gig on fretless bass where the guitarist and keyboardist were warring, and I was so frustrated I stepped off stage where I couldn't be seen and TRIED to break my strings. (this time it didn't happen). My friends later told me it was the most POWERFUL performance they ever heard me do... That was killer. Excellent photography!

Thanks for such a kind comment. I just added it as a bonus track to the Ether Ore album on bandcamp, in case you are interested in an audio only version.

YES! I wholeheartedly agree. This performance demonstrates what a brilliant improvisational composer and performer Greg Howard is. It was a big bang, indeed. It was lightening in a bottle. He blew the audience away in San Jose. Including myself.
Going way back to Sunday, November 16, 2003, The World Stick Seminar & Concert. Emmett and I drove up from LA and spent a long weekend, with non-stop shooting for me. This event is super-meaningful for me. It was the maiden voyage on a quest to make a documentary about my brother. I feel so lucky to have been there with our cameras and sound at The Gaslighter Theater in Campbell, CA, with Greg giving the third to the last performance out of ten performances.
I'd say Greg's one-pointed focus here is the perfect example of one man "beating his swords into plowshares." He arrived to the concert ready to "play" not expecting that the tech audio setup would fall on his shoulders. He didn't ask for it, but all the gear troubleshooting for 10 performers that night somehow became his responsibility. He even helped with the sound recording as I recall. There was supposed to be an audio crew there to deal with all that stuff. By the time he was to perform, his angst had built up, although, non of us would have been aware of that by his usual mild-mannered demeanor. Greg took it all out on his instrument, and The Stick was ready for it.
The Gaslighter closed its doors on May 31, 2006, after 37 years at the Campbell, CA location.
BTW, folks, I'm happy to say my documentary about Emmett has received some new life lately. I stopped shooting while Emmett was in decline, but I participated in a series of professional documentary support groups and got involved in a story development workshop with a small crew. I'll be making a formal announcement in the coming weeks.
