![Post Post](./styles/serenitydarkblue/imageset/icon_topic_latest.gif) Blue Bossa
I saw Leo Gosselin do a fine version of this back at the Mira Costa Seminar. I play out with this when I gig with Marc Bagasou, so I was inspired to learn the counterpoint in the left hand and match it up with the melody in the right hand. We'll be doing a Stick Night later in June together with Emmett, Kevin and Dale Ladouceur in Santa Monica - I will post an announcement soon enough, should be big fun!
This was a first take, so it was short as we needed to get the girls into bed - you can hear Deanne doing dishes in the background (they're not going to clean themselves).

Also, I had to learn that bit that Ray Manzarek did so well in his left hand. A nice variation for latin. He was a real inspiration, hitting all those bass lines and making it look easy all the while. What a cat.
Happy Thursday! Gene

Your dishes don't wash themselves? You're using the wrong brand. That was really nice. Too bad it had to be so short...so many places up and down the fretboard it could have gone! What a pairing of this tune and the weather here in the Northeast - we're on day 6 of rain in Maine (falling mainly on my brain), and it's starting to get a little bit much on the psyche. (I could never live in the Pacific Northwest.) But if it's going to be rainy and melancholy, then at least I have Gene to add to the soundtrack. Thanks for putting out another good one!

Gene, Very nice FRESH ARRANGEMENT, get yer fresh arrangments here... fresh arrangments.. no kidding. With some of the hack groups I have the displeasure of playing with around here, this is the tune they call ( aside from MIles Davis All Blues) when they can't thnk of the next song to play. we sigh, we grumble, look up to the sky in a Religious help way, and then play a vamp on the Cm7. but this! First the Riders on the Storm in a bossa kinda way was brilliant and a nice tip of the hat to a great keyboard player, visionary and change the course of music history forever musician Ray Manzarek. The mythos behind the meeting of all them is worth exploring and made for intrigue and mystery that used to propel music, not how Justin Bieber wears his hair this month. Two things abound in this post- you used some alternate chord changes ( west coast changes ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif) which move the harmony of the melody, and you took a bluesy approach with your patented double stop hammer on -pull offs and use of slides between the 5th, b5, to the 4th. This put a whole new spin on this Kenny Dorham song from Real Book 1. What effect were you using to get those squeaks and pecussive ceramic clanks- was it the TCEvenrudeFractal boutique pedal? that goes for about a small used car? Luc- loved the "you're using the wrong brand" comment - got a guffaw this morn. Gene, thanks for another great post and showing how a tired old song can breath new life, another one of "Gene's Gems" take care, Dave Brosky your dbro!

Great job Gene. I liked the syncopated(is that the right term?) bass. I mean bass that doesn't fall pecisely on the beat. That is tough to do while playing melody lines in the right hand. That is unfortunate for me because it seems all my bass lines are like that. By the way, is that the new "Linear Fret Marker" tee-shirt from Stick Enterprises, Inc. that you are sporting? Mike

I like your intro. There is something I don't really understand and it is on your second chord. I guess you start on a Cm...and the second one should be Fm...there is a note that sounds a bit out for me...well...I didn't check on my own instrument, I just listened to it. I suggest you introduce an Ab note somewhere in your base line to support the minor side of this chord. Am I wrong? Appart of that...nicely played...as usual.

Thanks again, Gene. I have to say I like how you are comfortable just turning on the mic and not letting the environment keep you from recording. Frogs, kids, flying origami creations, ringing telephones, and today, household chores. Adds an organic touch to your work. Diggin' it. Thanks friends. I wasn't using any pedals on this outing as time was short, straight into the Behringer K900x. The biggest challenge with this tune, and it comes together like a puzzle when it does, is nailing I-V bass line. You can omit that pattern from the 13th bar and just sustain the Dmi7b5 as the A in the bass conflicts with the Ab in the melody line. Mike you can do this. Math is not my strongest subject, but in this case, this is just math. It's a great study in that the melody is simple enough that you can allow yourself to ramp up on the bass part- same with Girl from Ipanema. Start with the just the bass note (you can add 3rd and 7ths later) and just nail the melody. Being a father is the greatest distraction I know. I am hoping that my daughters will take up drums and tenor so I always have someone to jam with. So, the Fmi7 part is truly just that - Fmi7. The Ab is element is played with the third finger in the left hand and sustained which I am hitting the V of IV, alternating on F and C with the C above the F, with the first finger. The Ab also occupies the first half note of the bar in the melody. Would you suggest that I not hit the C in the bass line Kataway? Any suggestions welcome Dexter Gordon's version has a much more active flowing bass line but the way I played it in Latin bands was more straight up. Thanks for feedback all, I appreciate it.

Hello Gene...being a dad a one of the best thing on earth...lucky guy. I picked up the line of your Fm and I think I found what looks strange to my ears. Harmonically speaking there is no problem at all. But you play a low Ab on the first time of this bar. On my side I was expecting again a note F (the root) followed by the Ab note...it's not a big deal...it just sound strange to my ears. In fact starting in C ou play these notes...C, G, (2x) F, C and the Ab...I was expecting F, C, F, Ab
