Post Re: Looper Trooper
Glenn! I'm struggling to come up with more than "Fuck yeah!" but "Fuck yeah!" This is exactly what I'm looking to do--and even if it wasn't, that was SOOOO awesome! All of that! That's stylistically really very much like what I want to do--including the melodies and the positive energy vibe, and the building up by slow layers. I swear this is exactly where I want to be on Stick, within say 3 to 4... decades or so. I kid--I want to be there now!!!

Sagehalo and Jayesskeer are both correct as well: a looper seems like a fantastic tool, and also, sagehalo's way of transcribing the piano music into Stafftab and learning to play it is all excellent advice. Really good advice on becoming a better Stickist. Just great advice all around for good Sticking.

Very well said and point definitely taken! Amen! 8-)

But I want to use it for more than just compensating for my not-yet-super-fly interdependence Stick skills. I also want to be able to play MANY different instruments, and not just Stick. :ugeek:

I'd like to be able to beatbox, and layer sweet, sweet vocal melodies, and play keys, and various other instruments and build it all up just like this video. As the title of the video suggests, "Guillermo Cides: a real one-man band," this is my vision as well, and Stick has gone a long way to making me a better bass and guitar player. I'll get there on the Stick, but I'd also like to just integrate looping into my style and compositions altogether.

I used to use a MIDI 8-track sequencer, and do looping of keyboard tracks in real time. But I've never added the audio side of the house. Becoming a Stick player--and Jayeskerr's video was an awesome example of looping as a compositional tool as well--I'd like to do more of what both those videos were showing.

But again, fuck yeah! That Guillermo Cides is really good. I need to start looking out for his stuff more. Thanks, Glenn!

Cides is disgustingly good...

So Scott, we've got 2 Looper threads going at the same time. How about you talk about the philosophy and deepstuff about Looping and what it means to Sticking, and over here, we talk about specific hardware. Especially, since you have the experience with them as a musician and a composer, and I need to buy one.

So hardware-wise, Glenn, Scott, sage, anyone of course, and I see piratebruce is also in the market for one, what do you have, what do you WANT, and what do you recommend?

Adds: I changed the title of the thread slightly to reflect that I'm specifically interested in what to buy! Or what to Gear-Ache over...

For instance, that gear that Reggie Watts was using. A 4-track looper with a footpedal controller (and a mic of course). That looked sweet.

Honestly you really need a ton of bells and whistles. My first box was a Line6 DL4 and I managed to do quite a lot with it in spite of its very limited functionality.

Later I came upon the Echoplex Digital Pro and have really never looked at anything else. It has always had such an organic feel to it and it does some things that no other units do. Namely, the "glitching" where you can drop quick samples into a loop. I've used this in several recordings but never managed to work it into a live performance. The clip below was the result of hitting record after I'd already built up a couple of loops.

Unfortunately the EDP was somewhat stupidly expensive and are not the easiest things to come by anymore. Two pieces of good news though. The Mobius software looper does most of what the EDP did plus more even though we're still waiting on the 64-bit version. Also, Mathias Grob is planning on releasing a software version of the EDP this year.

Excellent, Glenn! Thanks for that wealth of info and for the tune!

Let's see:

Don't tell me that! :D But you're right--lots of bells and whistles needed because there's a lot of different stuff I'd like to get into with looping.

I see it on reverb.com for around $650-$799 but only used. :(

Now I hadn't thought of a software solution (well, different than using Pro tools to just loop stuff), and poking around their website, I've immediately VERY interested.

http://www.circularlabs.com/

Quote:
Welcome to Circular Labs, home of the Mobius programmable looper.

Mobius is software for the real-time creation of audio loops. It was inspired by the venerable hardware loopers of the past, but moves beyond them in many powerful and exciting ways. You can think of Mobius as 8 synchronized stereo loopers that can be used in any combination with extensive MIDI and computer keyboard control. Loops may be saved to and loaded from files. A powerful scripting language allows you to create macros or customize Mobius to support your unique style of performance.

Mobius is available for both Windows (XP and Vista) and OS X (10.4 or higher). It can be run standalone, as a VST plugin, or as an Audio Unit plugin on OS X.
So that's free and there's a forum of users for help and ideas. I'll be sure to check that out later when I'm at home. And a software version of the EDP sounds interesting as well.

Thanks for that, Glenn!

Sorry ... I meant to say that you DO NOT need a ton of bells and whistles.

The DL4 had very little but honestly you don't need much. The extras are nice and I've obviously made use of some of the weird idiosyncrasies of the EDP but most of the tunes I do you can reproduce with simple record and overdub.

Hmm, I think that if I were to get really serious about looping In a live context (and I might)
My Roland RC300 does the trick. BUT... Like Glenn says, another bell or two and a few whistles might come in handy. But... Depending on how far you want to take it I think is the biggest factor here!

When I play Stick, I have two separate signal paths each with it's own processing capabilities, complete with modelling and yep, looping. That's a pretty simple looping setup, perfect for if I wanted to play some guitar solos or another instrument over a stick groove live... I still really need to get a lot better at Stick, but I'm working on that, haha For me, looping is more of a practicing, and a creativity tool. So simple works. I can loop the bass and the melody side separately, or together. For the most part, I prefer to play my own lines. But I do like playing other instruments too, and a looper can allow that to happen pretty seamlessly.

Now, if I were to get all hardcore about looping with the Stick involved, I am thinking that a mixer, with all of my instruments going into that, then tying into the looper (RC300, or similar multitrack looping system) which then in turn ties into a PA.

Lol some routing logistics (auxiliaries, etc) would have to be worked out, and yeah, one might be carting all kinds of gear around, that's for sure...

The TC-Helicon VoiceLive 3 has a very good looper in it that has three different tracks that each support overdubbing. It was overkill for my needs, but I originally got it because my wife sings and I could use it as a guitar effects processor. That might make it uniquely useful to a stick player that sings. It has vocal effects, guitar effects and the looper.

It's expensive for a looper, of course, but not too expensive for everything it does. I thought the guitar effects were quite good except for the heavier distorted sounds. I found mine on eBay for $400 after being a little patient.

I'm still trying to decide on what looper to get to replace it. I went with a Line 6 Firehawk HD for effects. I have a variax guitar that goes along well with it and am excited to hear how the stick sounds coming through it. (Railboard should arrive on Monday!)
