It's kind of funny. Work yer butt off on an original thing, nobody cares. Play a small bit of a Beatles tune that I stole from Kevin Chiasson and people go crazy.
hehehe
I feel your pain on getting attention for original Stick stuff. Even though I'm obviously biased because we do original stuff together.
I don't even have the benefit of the occasional Beatles tune to bask in the warm attention of the forum. But you've knocked out like 30 covers over the last year. I'm jealous that you can read down and play so many covers, but I guess not jealous enough that I want to spend the time doing it, instead of making the originals that no one much is interested in.
But I suspect that's why we're working together--because we both have this burning desire to make stuff. Some people just want to hear and play Brown-Eyed Girl (I love that song, actually!) and that's okay too.
But if you were to ask me in advance which would get more attention, an original or a cover, and then make it a Beatles cover, well, then you now have everyone's attention. I suspect that's why so many awesome Stickists have a Stick Beatles album or three.
People are not necessarily responding to the amount of work that went into something, but are also enjoying hearing songs they already like and are familiar with. I'm as guilty as the next guy.
I occasionally give myself the composer's Tough Love Pep Talk and channel the words of the awesome banjo player and sometimes comedian/actor Steve Martin:
"Be so good they can't ignore you."
Quote:
"What they want to hear is 'Here's how you get an agent, here's how you write a script,' . . . but I always say, 'Be so good they can't ignore you.'"
--Steve Martin
With that in mind, I think you're pretty damn hard to ignore, Scott. Please keep rocking it out and making ScottMusic. But you'll always get more loving doing a Beatles cover.
