Great video. Its good to see you playing even if its a little out of sync. I didnt really notice that much ...was enjoying you rocking out. Great energy in your tune.

Thanks guys! The lead sync lag is really small--I only noticed it on big dramatic pauses and down notes and bobs of the head. And right at the very, very end. But still--room for improvement next time! Get it right and it looks natural. Good it wrong and it doesn't rock as tight.

And thanks for the compliments! I'm just trying to put all this fractal energy to good use. I could have done this a long time ago, if I'd thought of it. And gods know I have no longterm plan for any of this. Just do stuff every day and keep doing stuff. And then I discovered Sticks, and had to re-think whatever it was I used to do with piano.

I love that NS/Stick bass sound, and the Stick bass sound, for that matter. And then some plugins on top of it. But when you got prime NS/Sticky bassy beef, it doesn't take much seasoning. Or prime vegetables, if that's how you roll.

"Jikan sae areba." "If only I had time..." There's so much I want to do with that phat NS bass sound! And still working on that lead sound. No jazzy clean chorus-only for me! Looking for that "brown sound," as EVH describes it, "molten" as I describe it. I am pleased with the clean sound on the lead for the first verse. A stock Guitar Pro blues lead patch and it was done. But when we kick it into molten, that needs a lot of EQ loving to make it live nicely with everything else. Maybe I need Sammy Haggar, who can go higher, since the low side is already taken. Sorry, Diamond Dave! :(

Thanks, guys!

Speaking of adding a phat analog synth line via the Harmonix Synth 9 coming in a couple of weeks....

This will be a lot of fun, man! I love EHX pedals, they are extremely cool. Nothing out there sounds like them, they are as unique as the people who play them in my opinion!

Steve, what video software did you overlay your image to the background? Looks pretty clean.

I listened to this driving back to work at lunch, ran it through Sync into my car stereo and turned it up. In the car, the distortion parts seemed high in the mix, didn't notice that off my iPhone. I'll play it again later tonight through my monitors. Always fun to see what recordings sound like in different media. Enjoyed it, nice job !
I am now an Adobe Premiere Pro fan, convert, and user. I keep discovering that it can do everything that I thought only Apple products could do.

In the office, we have every possible flavor of the Adobe Creative Suites, to include fun things like After Effects and the like. So I use Adobe products at home. Photoshop and Premiere get most of my attention now for photo and video manipulation.

This is just the stock Chroma Key plugin called "Ultra Key." I highly recommend both lighting your green screen more evenly and also not having wrinkles in it, which made cleanup work extra hard. Next time, I'll have more even lighting and make sure the green screen is tight against the wall. I wish I had a wall that I could just paint green and be done with it, but the wife says no way. Behind me were the family room curtains that kept the screen from laying perfectly flat. I'm actually pleasantly surprised how much of the background was knocked out.

As for the the distortion being high in the mix, you are actually completely right. When I adjusted the EQ to bring out the parts I liked and kill the ones I didn't, it had the overall effect of raising the subjective volume. I lowered the master on the lead sound but then I summed some of the left and right together and that probably needed more dropping of the total. Anyway, yes, I think the mix needs lots more work.

But I'm supposed to add vocals, and then that'll undo the space I carved out for the lead (which is now too loud), so final adjustments need to wait for that vocal and synth line. And if Steve Oz gets me that harmonix pedal, I can use that for the phat synth sound!1!!!! Ohh, I would love to keep it all Stick! I can not use keyboards at all. The Synth Nine will come "in a a week or two" according to OZ. You just know that I'm gonna use that! 8-)

Now, if someone will write and record some vocals for me....Mr. Lee Roth? Phone call on line 6!

Thanks, Steve!

I took a one day guitar seminar that included Billy McLaughlin a few weeks ago in Whitehall, Mi. One of the classes was songwriting. First time I'd ever been exposed to writing lyrics. Within a half hour the group of us wrote an excellent song.

Goes like this:

Come up with some chords. (You already have a song)
What do those chords make you think of? Write down about a dozen or so things the chords or in your case your complete song makes you think of.

Think Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus bridge ending, or rearrange to your liking.
Intro might be instrumental, or you can make a lyric.
For each element look at your dozen items you wrote down. Take what you can use and you might think of more as you do this, and fit/modify them into the Verse/Chorus/Bridge/ ending structure.

Sounds simple enough and the process goes by quicker if you have a group of people to work with. We were down in a half hour, and some kid provided a nice simple guitar solo to boot.

Steve, you have both invaluably helped me and also shamed me into just doing it. It's not that I don't know how or even that I haven't done this before. The lyrics and the melody stuff is actually not the hardest part for me. It's the simple opening the mouth and recording vocals part. I'm usually very self-conscious and very self-critical where my singing is concerned. I do in fact have pitch problems and I know it and have been told it--and I can correct it. And will (we have the technology--lightning flashes!!!). But it makes me not as gung-ho about doing vocals as I am about all the other instruments. I'm usually somewhat fearless and shameless in all aspects of my music...except singing.

But you are 4 million percent right: this stuff is not that hard. I'm writing Van Halen-level lyrics here, and I've already got a classic song structure in place. It's just a matter of DO IT! (insert motivational video of Shia LaB. yelling at the camera).

Your reminder and advice have motivated me to just get it done. It's that same feeling of procrastination I always got before having to write papers in school: it's something that I can do and that I'm actually quite good at when I get going (the papers, anyway), but I never want to actually get started.

I'll work on lyrics today and make a goal to record vocals this weekend! Thanks, Steve/MichNS!

[Puts away his Jim Morrison beret and puts on his David Lee Roth bandanna..."Something something... Reach down... between my legs ...ease the seat back....something..."] :ugeek:

Adds: By the way, Steve/MichNS, listened to the latest version on the work speakers, and the lead distorted line is way too hot, now that it's been EQ-adjusted. I'll drop that down a couple of decibels at least and reload the SoundCloud file later tonight. I have a mix in my car CD player that sounds awesome, but the entire levels are really low. Trying to get iphone speakers, car speakers, and studio speakers to all agree on a mix is challenging, yet crucial to a good mix that works on all devices.

Also, just spending 30 minutes on it this morning over some coffee on a break, I came up with some very good rhyming thoughts on the whole concept of the "Purpling," which is Blue and Red together, and with all the deep thoughts that those two things juxtaposed together makes. It also might become "Sticked and Stoned," unless that's been taken already (hasn't every possible use of "Stick" already been used? Let's find out!)

But as I thought, lyrics are fun and easy once you get started. That part's almost done. Now to vocal melodies and then to recording. And then the REAL mixing and the REAL video or videos....

Double adds: Damn it! Fricking "Wayland" already used it!

I played some more with the distorted guitar sound. I un-summed the de-stereo-ing and re-stereofied it, and played with a lot of different EQ settings. I'm getting close to what I want. This mix is now uploaded to the SoundCloud file, so those of you late to the Purpling party or coming back will only hear the latest version (rather than having 42 SoundCloud versions of the same tune). Guitars might still be a bit hot without the vocals but it's close to what I hear in my head.

Got a good set of lyrics written. "Sticked and Stoned" is a popular name for a song title and album title, in rock and country, according to Teh Google, so I'll continue to use it for lyrics but not for the title. And maybe this weekend I'll get a first crack at recording vocals.

Would be cool to layer endless loops and name it Mandelbrot Sets. Starting very simply and progressing to more and more detail like continued magnification of Mandelbrot Set graphics.

Walter, that DOES sound cool! You should do something like that!

The "Sink Family Rule on Awesome Suggestions" goes something like this: "The Person Who Comes up with the Awesome Suggestion is Hereby Tasked to Implement It." Mainly because my wife has a lot of ideas for awesome home improvement projects or tasks or chores that I should or could do..."You know, it would be awesome if you would organize the garage and built some more shelves and..."

Yes, honey, that would be awesome. You should totally get on that right away! (She has woodworking skills, too! And a lot more time than I have...)

I'm just kidding with you, of course, Walter. That does sounds like some true "fractal music." And you should totally make that happen! I'll be your first number one fan. :geek: I'd love to see what your idea of "fractal Music" becomes. And thanks for cheering me on!

Thanks, Bruce! I can of course play keyboards as keyboards but the Synth9 has some killer sounds and I'd like to keep this as just Sticks if I could. And I've been planning since riff one on this tune that it would be very late-80s Van Halen-ish, so some fat analog keyboards is more than appropriate!

I'd love to see your all-eHx pedal board! The Synth9 will be my first EHX pedal, but I really doubt it will be my last. There's a whole bunch of these that I really, really want! Show us some of yours, when you get back onto dry land.

Thanks for stopping by, guys! I'm probably done with the mixes for now and will just concentrate on adding vocals until that Synth 9 comes along. It may or may not even get added, once vocals are on board. But then a really melodic Synth9 riff could just overtake this song entirely. And I know there's a lot of good melodic riffs in the old subconscious that are dying to react to this little tune. I wouldn't be surprised to take this up a notch or 3. And Steve does melodies! (and refers to himself in the third person when he's not trying to be modest.)

This little jam rocks, at least to me, and I'll spend some time trying to make it into a "song." People like songs, and songs make good videos. Wish me luck! (You know I'll overshare and you'll see it all anyway!)

So glad I woke up on the holy morning of April the 20th to log onto The Stickist and watch this. This visuals are beyond excellent, not to mention of course I'm extremely jealous of your distorted tone. The more and more I've listened to music played on the NS Stick, the more fascinated I've become by it, particularly in its use in the eight string guitar role in metal. This definitely among other things inspires me to buy an NS in the future.
