Very sucky news
Just heard about the passing of Alan Holdsworth. Very sad. Alan owned a Stick at one point. Perhaps we can get an Emmett anecdote. I interviewed him for a guitar magazine in 2000. Spoke many times at the NAMM CONVENTION. Major influence on lots of players including me. Oy He was about to tour. RIP

If anyone is so inclined, there's an interview I did with Allan in 2000 for Twentieth Century Guitar magazine on my website.. We had a great time. Very informative Steve Adelson

This morning I found it hard to know what to say....
Hit me like a tonne of bricks...., I went for a walk, felt sick then had a cry. Back home now collecting my thoughts.

It's a really tough one. He will never compose another tune or play a new solo. I'll never hear him play live again. It happens to us all, but the improvisers are tough to lose.
Sad day

Re: Very sucky news
Sad to hear this, but so grateful to him and all that he shared with us through his music. My first introduction to him was through Bruford's One of a Kind album. This album was a more approachable collection of different musical styles, call them what you will, it worked for me.
And the whole album is like this. Just a solid outing by a solid core of instrumentalists. I always enjoy hearing more about him here on the Stickist and am looking forward to people posting their favorite tunes or how they were introduced to him.

Re: Very sucky news
That's a real loss on the planet. So many chords remain to be re-harmonized and traversed with those impenetrable legato lines. A style with substance (if only I could decipher the system). Or was that the game (no system)? He'd never tell. Even John McLaughlin confessed his bewilderment and utter fascination in a magazine interview.
Allan is among my top three musicians including McLaughlin and Gary Husband, drummer on several of Allan's albums and a transcendent pianist in his own right.
And yes Steve, I had 2 or 3 duo jam sessions with him at his house in Tustin and met his family there. He also visited our house on Yucca Trail once or twice to help design specs and then to pick up his customized "Tenor Stick" (somewhere between my "Alto" and standard models).
What is it? Any finger at any fret and let 'em fly? Permutations on a melodic theme? Total god like control at an ungodly speed? His harmonic progressions were from heaven and the shape of his linear movement was sheer joy.

Re: Very sucky news
Perhaps even more Sucky, Rick Beato commented on a live stream yesterday that Alan Holdsworth was one of those nice guys that fell victim to some A-hole record companies and management! Sounds like he pretty much got dissed on many financial compensations. I guess he even had an go fund me account for some of his music endeavors, what a sick world while pop trash lives in opulence! Sorry for the rant. There's a fund for his memorial here: https://www.gofundme.com/allanholdsworthmemorial

Loved his music. One of two guitarists F.Z. actually liked...Saw him live with U.K. That's two members of that band we've recently lost.
