Post The Purpling
I didn't know where to put this: in Pedal-Tone Stick Blues (viewtopic.php?f=15&t=12085) where this piece started and was developed and where you can see videos of me inching my way here; in The Temples of Sphere Inks (viewtopic.php?f=21&t=11464) where I post my fractal animations and art, non-Stick music, and talk about superhero movies & superhero movie music; in the Chapman Stick or the NS/Stick sections; or somewhere else. I'm making a video of me playing all of this (most parts already taped) which I'll post separately when it's done. My son is helping me record some extra dramatic scenes and closeups this Easter weekend. Should be my most produced performance video I've ever done (and hopefully the most interesting!)

Happy Easter, by the way!

Wherever you find this tune, I've updated the SoundCloud file so that you'll hear the latest version of this tune, even if you've heard an earlier version. At this point, the tune needs vocals, and I'll probably add a fat analog synth lead or riff on top with the vocals and in some quieter sections. But for Sticky purposes, this tune is complete for what it is at the moment: just a Stick Jam, with Chapman Stick and NS/Stick and drums (and fractals), in the key of Gflat, chord progression i iv v. (Needs more EQ work but that's an ongoing process...)

Deep inside the The Fractal Realms lies The Cave of the Bat--and The Purpling.

A 3D Fractal Animation Music Video (3D FAMV) made with Mandelbulber 2.10, and formula "Pseudo Kleinian stdDE." Original music "The Purpling" made with Chapman Stick (10-string rhythm & lead guitar), NS/Stick (8-string bass/guitar) & drums.

Holy Batcave hollows! That's a lot of progress on an instrument you bought new from us not even three months ago. More than progress, it's a complete multimedia performance with high entertainment value.

Combining your strings and keys along with the fractal imagery, there's no end to "The Syncing Sensation" series. Just wish the fractal navigation was smoother but it must have to do with microprocessor power and/or YouTube delivery.

Loved your wiry bass register, then the wild lead melody ride. All I needed were the bat inhabitants themselves, hanging in the background, lunging forward and in your face. With all the visual motion, it seemed 3-D with some added "traveling music" for the experience.

Thanks so much, Emmett! :o When I’m finished with the performance video of me playing all this, I think this will be even better! (I love the fractals but this piece is interesting to watch “live” and I’ve already recorded most of the video.) And then it probably needs vocals and keys to round it out.

And as for the progress, the logical and versatile layout and design of the Sticks reward experimentation and perseverance, and just simply Sticking with it. I’ve played with some tunings and went from the Rosewood to the Railboard to the NS/Stick and back and forth among them, and discovered that if I get frustrated with one, it can help to switch to one of the others. And riffs learned on one instrument translate nicely to others, although tunings and ranges and some brain cells have to be adjusted.

Case in point: this piece was written on my 10-string Rosewood on the melody side, and recorded. It was in the middle of a string change to mirrored 4ths, so I went back later and added the NS/Stick bassline. The pattern is the same for the bass-4ths-tuned NS as it is on the melody side of the Rosewood. I just moved the pattern down and over, and played on the thicker, heavy-gauge strings of the NS. Lord Vader, his NS-ness, said, “I can do this pattern in three octaves!” and so I recorded all three octaves but this started out as Rosie’s song, and I can also play this all on the Rosewood, so there’s technically no reason to mix the two Sticks together. I doubled the high Rosewood melody on the NS and then muted it. Then I did a version in the “middle” register (and muted), and then the bass version (but can’t grab the 4ths and 5ths under the root, so I go “up” rather than “down” on the low bass register. So some overlap with the “middle” register.) But then this was turning into an NS/Stick song, so I just kept the bass line and put away the middle and high registers.

I’ll have to use a looper to play this live, as it takes four hands for two parts, but that’s doable enough. And if it becomes a song (it really should), then there’s that challenge. But the songcrafting is the thing—I’m not too worried about playing this live. Until maybe Interlochen this summer!

Thanks, Emmett! I took a little bit of the sub-bass out of the bassline and adjusted the SoundCloud file, and then Youtube slightly normalizes some audio, so the video audio and the SoundCloud don’t always track 100%. There’s a lot of competition for the bass between the three instruments, and further work mastering and tweaking this needs to be done. But vocals need to be added, so I won’t futz with this too much until then.

YouTube is awesome for watching things that do not move quickly or change much. That is 98% of most videos that people watch. Unfortunately, these fractal animation videos, by their nature, often change view quickly or have details that need a high data throughput rate to view. Youtube automatically compresses the video and introduces artifacts or blurs in the video whenever the scene changes too much too quickly.

This particular video is really a 2.78GB file, that is itself compressed way down from the original 13 GB of 6300 frames in 1080p jpeg quality. Almost any computer can view a 1080p video (most cellphones even, or at least at 720p), but the chokepoint is the data-through rate. Which means a fast internet connection, and good buffering on the viewing computer.

These videos work fine as a small embed in a web browser, but you're only viewing maybe 2-3 hundred MB of the video, versus the 3 GB of the original. Vimeo will allow you to download versions of the file, to include the original! Just an option, if you'd like to see these at the optimum viewing quality.

(Notice at 720p, you're getting only 85 MB of the original 3 GB! Even at "1080P," you're only getting 145 MB of the original!)

Thanks so much, Emmett! I'll post the Purpling Performance video when it's all done! (And then work on adding vocals...)

Thanks, Rob and Scott! You guys rock--I appreciate it!

Happy Easter!

Adds: there were a couple of EQ points in the "molten guitar" sound that irritated me. It's amazing what a little EQ shaping here and there will do for a sound. I ended up stripping out the patch and starting all over again, and cut out anything that I didn't know what it was doing. Guitar Rig patches can have a lot of components and devices on them, doing all number of things to the signal path, but I wanted a little more control over the sound. I re-loaded the SoundCloud file with the EQ tweaks that I said I wasn't going to make yet (but I like the newer sound better now. But no promise that I won't keep futzing with it.)
