Post Re: MOD DUO

Hey Dean would this device be a good fit for the mod duo. I havent gotten a mod duo yet but Im thinking it needs more knobs. How do you control your mod while performing? Im just exploring options. The mod is in my future so keep this thread going guys.

This looks like a really cool Midi controller.
The Duo can connect to any USB Midi controller and power it. I believe the Duo will handle up to 1Amp at the USB Jack. The Twist uses 100mA so no problems there...
The downside is that you have to unplug and plug into another computer to modify any of the settings on the controller. For example, I use the KMI SoftStep and if I ever want to update it with different messaging on any of the switches I have to unplug, plug into my computer, make the changes, and plug back into the Duo. Just an extra step which for some reason really bugs me...

I know people who are using the PlayStation controller with the Duo.
I recently got the Source Audio Hot Hand USB and slowly learning how to incorporate it by putting it on the neck. I can send the midi message out the Duo's regular Midi out and control anything I want... I was able to control my Whammy DT!

The Fishman Tripleplay works with the Duo too!

Post Re: MOD DUO
So I am lucky, I know Dean 8-) and being ever so subtly he has encouraged the investigation of the
M-O-D but I have been reluctant because I have this belief that I am a "Hardware guy" :|.

Six in one, half a dozen the other right?... I always say "both" is the answer to conundrums and the M-O-D seems to be
just that, both...

So cool, this device could be the end-all if portability is a key requirement.

Just to note I am a long time Fractal user, three or four years worth and I can't say I am absolutely
in love, unfortunately. It has great tone but it is tedious to program and when it comes down to it I only
use about three sounds and then some derivatives of those sounds.

Also I have thought about and researched the Helix, a lot, and that machine is mighty cool especially the ability to change
sounds and have the trails from your previous sound "trail" into the other. But the Helix is
huge, another big slab of technology on the floor with a wonderful big screen to go with it
that can be read by aircraft ...Not to mention the price.

Here I come to save the day!

Good to know you Dean  I wonder if you could answer a few M-O-D questions
that I could not find adequate answers for on the M-O-D forum:

1.) I know you are a (controlled) loop enthusiast, has there been a looper (that works) developed for the M-O-D? On the forum there was some talk about a 4-trk looper but it seems to have bugs...

2.) Computers :o, I will be honest, I kind of hate computers. Love them too, but...
My question is for a Mac and that I am running 10.6.8. If I upgrade my old software
will not work (I might as well get a new computer). I have not found that question
addressed on either the website or the forum so I assume it is not an issue, or is it?
Specifically, is there a OS threshold that the M-O-D works from or works best with?

3.) Last question: I think that you mentioned that you use a midi controller along with the
M-O-D, any information to pass along on how that works? Sorry if I missed that in a previous post.

Thanks

Hi JRJ,
Always happy to answer questions!

1. Currently there is only a simple looper. You can record and overdub... very simple. I haven't heard any news regarding the upcoming versions but some of them are going to be very dependent on some upcoming firmware updates such as universal BPM to sync multiple loopers and other beat based effects. Another upcoming update is the ability to save/upload loops... I'm still using my Digitech looper at this time since it has all the functions I need.

2. The OS of your computer shouldn't matter since you access the Duo using a browser. Chrome seems to work best for Mac but any of them should work. There is no software to download. You use a browser to access the user interface. You literally use a web address to access the Duo and all the processing is inside the Duo.

3. Controllers - Any Midi controller will work with the Duo through the Midi jack or the USB jack. I use the Keith McMillen SoftStep plugged right into the USB jack. The Duo will power USB Midi controllers.
MOD is coming out with their own footswitch and expression pedal which plugs into the ethernet jack.
I'm working with an electrical engineer friend to design my own USB Midi footswitch using an arduino. I hear that the Arduino is a very easy platform for programming... but I have no idea how to program and will be learning as I build my footswitch...

I hope I answered your questions. Let me know if I need to clarify anything.

Post Re: MOD DUO
Hey Dean thanks for the reply. I guess that I am not going to jump into the M-O-D
right now but it is good to know that my computer is not an issue. There is a ton of
information on this little but powerful piece of gear and I am still looking into it. Also glad that the Kickstarter platform worked for this. There seems to be a bustling little community swirling
around it and it is interesting that there are videos of people besides guitarists
using the M-O-D, ie flutes, keyboardist and electronic musicians....

What I was or am kinda hoping for is a looper/recorder that could be integrated so that
not only could you loop with the device (and probably a midi foot controller) but
also so that performances and loops could be saved and later downloaded
into a DAW. Just my thoughts :geek:.

Thanks again.

If you are an owner of a DUO you can get a Beta Control Chain Footswitch for $85 (Includes Shipping). Once it goes to the general release the price will be $159.
You can purchase it from this link: https://checkout.shopify.com/15266793/checkouts/1d462ea35575a4a53b93abbc61a5924c?channel=buy_button

As a beta user the MOD team will want you to report any bugs you may come across. You will need to be willing to perform manual updates to your DUO and the Footswitch... which is very simple and outlined at these links.
http://wiki.moddevices.com/wiki/Releases#Manual_update
http://wiki.moddevices.com/wiki/Control_Chain

What makes the Control Chain so special?
I'm glad you asked!
*Control Chain is an open standard, including hardware, communication protocol, cables and connectors, developed to connect external controllers to the MOD. For example, footswitch extensions, expression pedals and so on.
Comparing to MIDI, Control Chain is way more powerful. For example, instead of using hard-coded values as MIDI does, Control Chain has what is called device descriptor and its assignment (or mapping) message contains the full information about the parameter being assigned, such as parameter name, absolute value, range and any other data. Having all that information on the device side allows developers to create powerful peripherals that can, for example, show the absolute parameter value on a display, use different LED colors to indicate a specific state, etc. Pretty neat, right?

Check out more details about this release at the MOD Forum at this link: https://forum.moddevices.com/t/new-peripherals-incoming-beta-testing-phase/1226

If you are an Arduino user/programmer and would like to design your own peripherals... MOD has a Control Chain Shield for $25.
You can get yours at this link: https://checkout.shopify.com/15266793/checkouts/9172d7479a5062e77daa3c451d66f4cc?channel=buy_button

I'm planning on learning how to use the Arduino and make my own custom footswitches and controllers. Maybe putting a proximity sensor on my stick to do some crazy things...

Yep, I tried it with a GI-10 and a GK-2A. It depends on the patch - some tracked okay, some not so. May be different with the Tripleplay, def worth trying.

My move at the mo is to use the MOD in tandem with the GP-10,and a usb out to the v-machine for nice string pads etc.. Prob have volume pedals to bring them in and out, not sure yet. Gonna take some figuring out.....

Just waiting on this http://www.primovasound.com/midx_20.html

Cheers

Hey Dean. Does this pedal have a freeze feature like the EH freeze pedal?
