One other suggestion, GoPros create new files roughly every 17 minutes if you let them run continuously. Since everything is digital, just turn the camera on and leave it on until you are done. You are not going to get a huge file like some digital camcorders do. Get a 32-64Gb card and you should do well. Then just use Quicktime to trim, edit and re-arrange as you wish. Then export it to use further if needed. If you happen to go past 17 minutes, say you are doing all of 2112, you will be combining files afterwards anyway because one GoPro file cannot fit a song that long.

When I first bought a first gen HD GoPro, I didn't realize this and kept hitting start and stop for separating each area of interest s a unique video file, only to find sometimes I didn't make good contact with the button as I wear full-finger gloves and have to pay attention to where I'm riding. And then I'd find longer areas of interest actually being split up file-wise.

I typically only hit the stop button when there's a long break in the action. No need to have long vids of nothing of value,

I don't like messing with remotes if I don't have to. Too many opportunities for mistakes, especially when trying to record yourself. And since GoPros create new files to reduce the file size of videos, it's somewhat pointless to me to bother start and stopping vids like video tape. Stay focused on what you are doing musically and you will enjoy what you are playing more than worrying about where you are with filming.

I don't even have a GoPro but this is excellent advice. I've rarely ever regretted recording a bunch of stuff I didn't use, but I always regret the many times I forget to record at all. Which is usually. Turn it on and forget about it.

One of these days a special project will be setting up some cameras all over the studio so that they and lights can all get turned on with one master switch, hopefully located next to the Pro Tools setup. Get everything set up instrument-wise, hit the VIDEO RECORD master switch and then RECORD on the audio DAW (usually Pro Tools), and instant recorded for posterity! And instant performance videos, and especially to figure out stuff that I did last night and CAN NEVER REPEAT AGAINNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!! (this happens frequently!)

Hmmm...maybe a summer project!

Just out of curiosity, how long can a GoPro video last? Until it fills the card or does it have a limit like SLR 's ?

That's dependent on card size. If I do say a four hour bike race and leave it on, the battery will die before it fills up a 16Gb card, with something like 2 gig the card will go first. I forgot how long the battery goes in a Hero 3, I had used an extra battery pack to squeeze out another 1/2 hour. The new ones I have will go over 2 hours. The ride I did today was about 2:42 and the Session 4 under my saddle was pretty much left on for the whole ride, died around 2:30.

You can alter the resolution to something smaller which will allow longer video time stored on the card as well.

Ok, thanks, all I needed to know! :)

It would seem that the camera mic in the Gopro (I use the Hero3+Black) doesn't have the option of controlling the input mic volume, whether one is using the adaptor or otherwise. AND it seems like there is a compressor on there also that you can't turn off. Uncool!

I have a Zoom Q2HD That I will muck with and see if I like it any better... I am thinking that I will most likely have to simultaneously record audio in a DAW separately and then match up afterwards. Kind of a pain in the butt, that's for sure! Ahh well...

Since I'm basically running everything through Mainstage these days, I just hit the "record" button in Mainstage while I'm playing to get really good audio and replace the audio in any video I record.

I shot this video using a GoPro Hero 3 and used iMovie to replace the audio with my Mainstage feed.

Yep, I am thinking that might have to be the way to go, no way around it. Thanks, fellas.

Never give up:

I have a larger Rode Video Mic Pro that has a 3.5MM pin, but you would have to mount your GoPro in something like a Strobo frame. Looks like Rode recommends their mini version of it.

I've been having a similar discussion on an acoustic guitar forum, posted a couple of vids of my new doubleneck acoustic guitar shot through my DSLR and older camcorder using the Rode. Received lots of positive feedback from other owners telling me it captured the unplugged sound perfectly. The camera shop I deal with told me Rode's are pretty much the best external camera mics. Discovered for me, I would need a USB to 3.5MM adaptor as GoPro quit making their cameras with 3.5MM audio inputs at versions 4 and 5. Since you have a Hero 3+ you don't need any adaptors.

I recently purchased a Zoom H4nPro as I've been needing to capture audio every week - the others I play with have been using i-phones and, well, just no :)

Thanks guys for your posts, handy info.

I just picked up a Zoom H4Npro, I look forward to getting that thing under control. I think it will be super handy for all kinds of things, even as a practice tool.

Also, I was messing around with my Zoom Q2HD as a webcam, finally got it sorted out as to how to get the Zoom's audio captured. Not the best audio (Again, disregard the Shite playing, I was just messing around) but it's another option, and a more "square" video as opposed to the gopro's definite 'rounded' fishbowl captures. All good. The next experiment is to record in Logic simultaneously as I do these things and then switch out, or blend the audio.
