Mike, you should, like post a few tunes here and see if the dudes could, like "Learn the basslines" and then you could have said dudes in question post videos of what they did and then you could see what you like, what you hate and maybe get some ideas...

Plus, it could be fun!

Great idea! Also, reading this made me think that when my NS/Stick comes, learning some basslines sounds like it would be easier than the Bach two-hand counterpoint that I had to learn with piano, when I started with it. Not knocking the bass role at all, but it's the one line out of all the instruments that I find the easiest to hear what's going on. Just the one note a lot of time, and not a lot of stacked notes on top of each other like piano. It's almost always the foundation of the chord or a passing note between them, and it's usually the 1, 5, or 8.

For playing along with the radio, I would think the bass player has it the easiest. Well, maybe the drummer. You can drum along to anything. Okay, maybe singing. That's pretty easy to half ass to the radio. Man, maybe only keyboards and guitar is hard. And most guitar is only 3, 4 chords for rock. Okay, keyboards wins--everybody else go home. :ugeek:

[Time passes while I play internet radio and rock some 10-string Rosewood bass...Thank you, save and return later feature...]

Since my Stick is a bass (well, we're trying here in this thread anyway), I turned on the radio--locally 96.3, The Hits, and played my Rosewood, bass only, along to some Britney, and then there was Every Rose Has its Thorn, totally random Poison, and that was pretty fricking easy. Man, this was a lot of fun!

Okay, this did not feel like the work that trying to noodle piano to the radio does. And I'm a much better keyboard player. But the bass lines are pretty easy to hear and if you can hum it, you can tap it.

I'm ready for Pop Hits anyway! And that's enough of that for the night.

(I played Every Rose Has Its Thorn in a cover band a long time ago, but I played the one-finger keyboard line and not the bass line. Strange feeling....)

It sounded like a bass to me. Not like what Britney was doing but it worked, and just like whoever played Poison bass (don't make me look it up. Most of the song is acoustic guitar, anyway.)

Damn it, now I have to see how close I got. Here's Chris Pratt when he's not Star Lord, teaching me how to play the bassline. This self-lesson in pop bass brought to you by Poison.

Adds: Now I have to do a cover version of this song and I don't even like this song. Come On Eileen was playing right before the Britney and that's another song I've played in a band. but not the bass line.

Ok. Thanks for the idea, Scott. I think both of these present a particular challenge for the Stickist(in the bass role). Blue Turk would be a cool solo cover, though!

This one should be easy.

Kevin Keith has some interesting tangential things to say about this in this interview:

Keep the ideas coming. I think there are some great ideas here and will definitely use some of the suggestions, in this musical context or another. Some of the preliminary experimentation has yielded very pleasing results. Most helpful so far, on short time and limited resources, were the suggestions about how to approach the strings with my fingers. But also I tried some changes in EQ and the "presence" knob on my amp(I didn't even know what that knob was for  ).

A gk3 on the Stick's bass side with a Roland VBass or Roland VB-99 might allow you to (eventually) model what you need. The Boss GP-10 is a guitar processor, but has some decent bass sounds and limited amp choices - the fretless being one of the better ones. The GP-10 has bass models, but they are for guitar range strings and the models are pitched down an octave - so when you play a Stick's bass strings through it, just transpose it back up an octave.

btw for those who are advised to get a VG-99 - the GP-10 is basically one channel of the VG-99. If you want a VG-99 equivalent - that I think has improvements over the VG-99 - you can buy two GP-10's and then Y your 13 pin out to both. If you need to send the 2nd one patch changes via MIDI, get a MIDX-20 from Primova sound...I use 2 VG-99's and two GP-10's.

The Stick sounds most normally (naturally emulative of?) like the MusicMan model or maybe the Rickenbacker from the Roland VBass/VB-99 modeling choices, but other models might work for you - additionally tweaking the modeled Front vs Center vs Rear pick-ups (model dependent), and EQ, compression, and bass amp models, etc. Also- maybe mainly stay on the lower 3 strings.

I explained my set up elsewhere for the Toy Quota album, but to sound like a bass and to cut through like a bass, I use a dedicated GK Fusion bass amp in addition to full range stereo PA - set of EV's with 15's. The bass amp was the only Stick item mic'd for the recording. For live work I don't think any PA does what a good bass amp does out of the gate - just like people wrote that a Stick is not a bass, I think that a PA is not quite an adequate substitute for a good bass amp - Kemper modeling amp or whatever. Some folks are happy with modeled amps with a sub-woofer in addition to the PA - can't begrudge them - to each their own.

The Doors had a great bass player on the LA Woman album. Great band - one way or another. Good to learn bass lines from too. -Brian

This probably isn't the best business but whatever. One of the first Tap Theory videos I did covers this exact topic in pretty good detail. It's normally behind the paywall but whatever, here's the link, just please don't share it.

If you like it, there's a lot more like it at http://www.patreon.com/jgoldbergmusic.

Thanks Josh! I gave this a look after you sent me the link, but was waiting to post any videos of my experimentation success or failure till you made this public. I have tried some of your ideas and those of others. I didn't want you seeing me possibly using some of the techniques you shared with me and thinking I was trying to take credit for thinking of them on my own.

Thanks for your instructional videos. I hope this "freebee" will direct folks to your site. Y'all check out Josh's site now, ya hear! (imagine Beverly Hillbillies theme song here) http://www.patreon.com/jgoldbergmusic

NEXT: Possible to make the Stick sound more like a banjo? I kid...

Mike I appreciate the consideration! I'm all about spreading the knowledge around, and while yes a lot of my videos are behind a paywall, a quick nod and a mention as to where you got the technique from is all I really ask. Please post a video of you trying out everybody suggestions! I'm excited to hear what you got from it. I'm also curious as to how you found the use of my own technique that I suggested and showed in the video, did it come naturally or is it something that you don't particularly think of yourself as using a lot on the stick?

I posted this first in showcase but it will probably make more sense here. This is me attempting to play a slap technique on the Stick. I will have some other examples coming soon of different techniques like finger plucking and such.
