Post A Real Time Mystery with Billy Sherwood (Yes)
I have posted this song before but just did a remix using and incredible piece of software and added violin from my friend Bruce Lebovitz. This song was written and recorded with Billy Sherwood (currently the bass player in Yes) several years back. I was never happy with the mix because there is so much going on. Four vocal tracks and six guitar tracks in addition to the original piano, organ, synth, Stick, and drum tracks I contributed.

The song tells the story of losing one's memory and struggle in finding connection in a now unfamiliar world. Billy wrote the lyrics.

I picked up Izotope's Neutron and Ozone this weekend and it made all the difference. Neutron is essentially a channel strip with EQ, compression, exciter, and transient shaper but two key features - Track Assistant and Masking. Track Assistant will automatically create an EQ curve based on "listening" to the track. You add the plug in to any track you want.

Masking will allow you to compare two tracks in one window and will visually show where the tracks "mask" each other and provide tools to adjust the EQ and let each track stand out.

While an experienced mixer could readily do the same thing, this is MUCH faster and for relative neophytes like me enormously helpful because it provides you with a starting point.

I think Izotope is still running their sale - I got the mixing and mastering bundle for a great price ($299).

The problem now is that I want to remix everything!

Thanks for listening!

Jeremy

Jeremy,

I'm at work and can't listen to your SoundCloud song, which is really the whole point of this posting. I can't wait to listen to it and tell you about the mix and the recording/songwriting but that will have to wait. That's so awesome that you're writing and recording with a Yes member. You're my hero!

I found myself very much interested in Izotope, particularly your description of what it can do.

That sound very interesting to me! I need some help lately mixing some more aggressive stuff with several guitars and Sticks and stuff all going on and all sucking up the headroom and EQ space. A graphical representation and analysis to go along with what I'm hearing seems very, very useful.

I'm going to check that out. I'm going to read some Izotope reviews here at work, since I can't listen to your fine tune, and see what the mixer audiophile community is saying (which seems to be nothing but good stuff about Izotope!)

I'll listen at home tonight and get back to you. Thanks for sharing and for the Izotope info. You must be really excited to re-examine and re-mix the whole back catalog. Congratulations and thanks for sharing!

Listened to the song: it's great! A wonderful mix as well. I put it on the studio speakers and rocked it out. Each line seemed very distinct and separated in the frequency space and stage. I don't know what the older version sounded like, but this sounds like a professional mix and master job. On top of being an awesome 8-minute prog rock song, with sections and solos, and vocals. Very nice work on every level with this tune, Jeremy!

On the Izotope front, I have downloaded a 10-day trial copy and am giving it a whirl. I am impressed by several of the presets instrument choices so far. Thanks for the plugin rec and the tune!

Wow, that should have been put on Yes's last album.
