Re: The Great Online "Stick Collaboration of 2016"
It's so awesome to hear that Stickland is coming together on this! Come on--all the cool kids are doing it!
The larger meta question about Group collabs is, what works for a group of people to all work together on a group project? We really only have a few examples that I'm aware of, We are the World and Do They Know It's Christmas (After all)? and Farm Aid.
One thing that might work is for everyone to take turns soloing on the same tracks. Get a drum and bass track, then everyone solos over it. But Stick being what it is, we can or could do the bass track ourselves as well. So we have what Scott is doing, pick a key and a speed and everyone contribute a few measures of whatever. I don't know how Scott is going to meld it all together and it's exciting to find out.
But maybe next time we have pretty much a completed backing rhythm track and then we ask for people to solo over it. That would be easier for some people who don't write their own songs from scratch, and even the songwriters can add a tasty or melodic or dissonant or whatever solo.
The other method would be assigning everyone in the group to do a cover song, say Brown Eyed Girl (just because I was ranting on that cover song the other day), and then having everyone submit their version. You can then paste different choruses and verses together into one bigger, master song.
So recapping:
1.) We can have Group collabs where everyone submits a solo over pre-provided rhythm tracks.
2.) We all do the same cover of the same song in our own unique ways.
3.) We all contribute a few bars to the same key sig and tempo.
4.) We all do something with the same chord change, say Aminor, Dminor, G, C, F, BFlat, E (A harmonic minor). The interests would be in seeing what each person does with the same chords but with different melodies and tempos and feels and genres and styles, etc.
Maybe a 5.) We break a song up into chunks and everyone is responsible for a different chunk. Steve A does the verse 1, Greg Howard the first chorus, another verse by Rob Martino, outro by Emmett, etc.

can we submit submissions via wax cylinder? lol
Heck, it would be totally cool with me. Sure, I'm in. I have NO idea how I explain a massive influx of wax cylinders to my wife, but whatever works. I finally got the Internet by interfacing a typewriter with a fax... lol
Send me yer stuff. Do it. It'll be awesome. If you are on the fence, just do it. Thanks!
Re: The Great Online "Stick Collaboration of 2016"
Hey I thought I'd share this small piece of 'stuff'. It was initially just a jam to maybe help a dude with the concept of a polychord, show a perspective of what it could be, how it sounds, etc. It could also show that "hey, it doesn't take that long to make up a thing!" I created this on the fly, and y'know what?
You could too!
So if you haven't already, record a ditty of some sort and send it to me. 'Cause then I can continue piecing together the "collab from heck" and then, in the new year I can share it with y'all! And I have to say, the submissions have been excellent!
Re: The Great Online "Stick Collaboration of 2016"
Good grief, the night before Christmas, eh? Craziness! Merry Christmas!
Well, I 'd like to thank everyone who submitted some music for this. The material I received was unique and interesting, and even though nobody has a clue what the heck is going on in the tune, everyone's parts are fitting in quite nicely. It's a lot of fun putting this together, playing "producer".
Anyone who hasn't yet submitted anything (due to fear, common sense, etc) should seriously ignore every reason they can think of to "not" submit a thing, and submit something anyways. It can be anything, and if doesn't have to be too long. Just a moment of some fun noodling! I'm pretty sure you were playing anyways...
Lemme recap;
Tempo = 110bpm Time sig = 4/4 but could be whatever... Key sig = Gmaj/Emin
Just hit record, and then send it to me. Easy as that. Send me your clean, dry, unprocessed tracks. jayesskerr@gmail.com

Re: The Great Online "Stick Collaboration of 2016"
Woohoo, I managed to send in a contribution!
Fun fact: I've heard that not all metronome apps are created equal. Turns out "they" are right on this one. I recorded a few tracks yesterday using a metronome app on an old iPod Touch.
As I was whittling things down in Audacity, I had generated a click track to help line stuff up, but something wasn't right. The click track and my recorded tracks were getting out of sync rather quickly.
Turns out the metronome I recorded with was clicking at ~108bpm rather than 110. I don't know if it was the iPod or the app, but either way, I had to re-record everything. Not a huge deal, but I thought I'd share so others might gain from my mistake.

I have to say, I got something sent in as well. I think he's being kind by calling it usable. But, it was fun sending things in and being a part of this project.
