So I am trying to make a video where I jam along. To another video or track I created. No worky, and for the life of me I would love to get this figured out...

Here is the scenario;
I create a track in Logic on the Stick. Videotape myself playing it for the disbelievers lol. THEN let's say I want to play a guitar solo over a section... is there any way to just "play" the backtrack in iTunes or QuickTime while you hit record and track yourself both video and audio playing your new bit.

I use Final Cut on a Mac and I do have a few workarounds for this, but I am wondering if anyone can pull off videotaping a live jam, with "in the box" audio, and no external in/out wiring via the interface. That is, jamming with a backtrack playing from the same source while simultaneously capturing said video...

Currently, if I videotape myself while actually recording the bits in Logic, it works out not too bad, especially if I leave audio cues so I can line up my new video clip's playing...

Thoughts?

Try recording the takes of both and then splicing the video together in the video editor.

By that I mean
Step 1: Set up both an audio interface and a camera separately
Step 2: videotape yourself recording the backing track
Step 3: videotape yourself recording the solo
Step 4: Make a wav file of the result of both
Step 5: edit the videos in such a way that they each line up with the wav file, in either consecutive order, or side by side on the same screen. To do this, use the audio from the video recording referenced against the audio from the wav file. When the two are lined up in such a way that it sounds like a single piece of audio, mute the video file to leave only the recording as the audio.

If you check out my playthrough vids that have multiple angles, I'm often using the cousin of this method. All the audio is from the front on view, and then the other angles are overdubbed, but I still play the whole song front to back so that I will have an audio reference.

It takes a little more time, but you also get the chance to sit on the audio and do a little mixing and make it sound even better, as well as the chance to experiment with different camera angles and shots. Over all, the quality of the video will wind up higher with this method than, say, videotaping yourself playing over the backing track through speakers and using the camera's audio.

I wish I lived near enough one of you that could show me all of this in person. It sounds darn impressive.

I got a video done, just an experiment to get it to work. Thanks a bunch, Josh! I was hoping someone might have an easier, quicker method but that's okay. Lol Key points, I definitely have to know my riffs all the way through, and to make it super easy to sync up, it's nice to create a cue of some sort to line up the video (I used 8 1/4 note clicks/percussive slaps). It's also handy to actually have some prepared music haha. For all of my hard work, I was left with a piece that was a bit underwhelming.

Still, I like that I can really polish the audio up, fix levels, compress and limit etc etc. Handy for dialogue. Thanks, guys!
