Glad this is not my instrument. Someone really butchered it: http://cgi.ebay.com/Chapman-Stick-9-Str ... _500wt_922

They did! That's also why the guy is selling it for cheap. I don't even know if it's worth the money he's asking for.

Looks like the original "modder" took a 10 string and changed out half the nut and routed for a standard bass bridge for wider string spacing--betcha the bottom 4 strings are tuned in fourths. Aside from cutting into a perfectly good instrument , not really a bad idea--if hadn't already purchased my NS I might've considered buying this. Judging by the age, perhaps somebody just couldn't wait until the NS came along?

Re: Franken Stick on ebay
Seems like if you wanted to have the headstock re-filled and re-drilled, and get SE to put a flaps unit and an adjustable bridge on it, you could undo most of the damage.
Terrible to look at in its present state though.

Re: Franken Stick on ebay
Not to ruffle any feathers here, but I am sort of surprised at the reaction you gentlemen are having once you find an instrument that does not match what you would consider "a recognizable instrument", or some sort of "known pattern"...... I may be the only one, but I celebrate the ingenuity and balls required to go ahead and apply whatever changes you need to your instrument to make it fit your needs/project/musical requirements. The Stick is on itself a product of several iterations, years of development, and it required a guy with a bunch of good ideas to come up with a piece of stringed wood that may have scared your own elders, as they may have found the creation as "weird", "unclassifiable", or.... firewood. That is often referred as "innovation"
Of any crowd around, i would have expected some open mindness on this one, made out of minds that enjoy venturing out of the standard once in a while.....Be careful lads, we may be getting the impression that there is some sort of "mainstream" within this little glass of water....
Peace

Re: Franken Stick on ebay
While it could possibly be retrofitted to work, it will still have some cosmetic damage, and possibly real structural damage from all the abuse.
It really is a shame.
