Flaps retrofit?
Are the flaps available for retro fit on older 34" scale Sticks? Is it recommended? Doesn't say on Stick.com.

Re: Flaps retrofit?
Not sure about that, Jim. My zebra Grand also has the set screws, which have always worked just fine. The Flaps are more convenient (no string removal necessary while making height adjustments) but it really isn't all that much of a hardship, to me at least, to loosen the string a tad and get the exact height for that given string.

Re: Flaps retrofit?
Thing is it seems to me once you like a tuning and have your Stick set up properly there's no need to adjust anything except an occasional tweak of the neck. Screws, flaps and adjustable bridge means nothing unless you decide to make a big change in your tuning.

Re: Flaps retrofit?
My stick is an old Ironwood model from the 80's. It has nut flaps retrofitted onto it. They are a lot better than the little screws...those things are sharp. They tear up the inside of a gig bag or the end of you finger.
The only downside is that Emmett had to shave off a tiny bit of the first fret at the top to fit them on. I have to hit that first fret pretty hard and accurate to get it to sound. It bugged me forever, but as my technique increased I was able to make them sound better. A playing example would be Greg's "Charmed Life" when you have to drop down to the first fret and play Eb to Ab chord patterns. I really have to punch those or it sounds like I've muted my instrument for 4 beats.

Re: Flaps retrofit?
Some thread necromancy I have just acquired a Stick From the early 90s. I really like it. I actually prefer it to the last stick i had (1827) -- probably cause the fact its not clear coated. the ONLY downside is the fact it has the screws instead of the flaps. I was strongly considering getting the flaps retrofitted. But what would the cost be on something like that? Its the only thing I want to change about an instrument that I otherwise find perfect and amazing. euphtub wrote: The only downside is that Emmett had to shave off a tiny bit of the first fret at the top to fit them on. I have to hit that first fret pretty hard and accurate to get it to sound I know you posted this like 3 years ago, but i wanted to comment anyway, since I'm resurrecting the thread. I had that problem, too on my lowest strings on my new stick -- which has the screws. But I raised the action a hair (1/2 turn on the screw), and it sounds really loud now. I believe it was that the string didnt have enough travel to get a good amount of energy behind it when I'd hit it.

Re: Flaps retrofit?
I had Flaps retrofitted on my Stick a few years back (2005?).
My Stick was built in 1996 and originally had the screws. I'm glad I had the retrofit done. The Flaps are much easier to work with for string adjustments, etc.

Brian Baggett Ft Qu'Appelle, SK What was the ballpark price, if you don't mind me asking?

I can't remember the price of the Flaps retrofit specifically, since I had much other work done to my Stick at the same time. My guess is that it was $150 or less. I could try to find my receipt... B
