You might like to take a look at other instruments offered in Classified over the last few years to get a better idea of a reasonable price?

You'll also find that ads generally include some clear & detailed images of the Stick.

I hope that helps. :)

Hi Scott, good to hear you are ready to sell your Ironwood.

I would tend to agree with DavidWS. To start, consider that you are charging $300 more than a new instrument.

***Full Stop***

Consider also that this instrument, to start, pre-dates the 3-D bridge, flaps, is a 34" scale instrument and most likely has the antiquated jumbo steel frets. Older instruments lack these modern amenities, so really, the only way you could demand this price is if your buyer knew nothing of the instrument, it's hardware or was just desperate to have an instrument. Stranger things have happened.

You could also swing for the fences and just wait it out like the individual wanting $6k for a Graphite Stick on Reverb. He lowered it from $8k and it's been available for 9 months. I've heard that Cory challenged him to a duel he was so outraged (inside joke).

There is a reason they no longer make the Graphite or offer the PASV-4, this vintage guitar mindset does not apply to the Chapman Stick. They are all handmade instruments directly from the manufacturer but the newer models have more features and that's a big deal when dropping $3200 on a instrument one has probably never even seen or played in person.

I would recommend spending some time on Reverb or eBay to get a more realistic price. Here is a link to Reverb's completed listings. The first 10 there are all under $3500. These older models are averaging (an amazing) $1800 - $2300.

You may find the right buyer given the demand for new instruments, but it is more likely that you will need to lower the price to compete with new instruments as well as used instruments that are more evolved versions of the Chapman Stick.

I hope that helps and that you don't take what I am saying in a negative way. Best of luck with the sale and be sure to post at least 6 - 7 pictures with the case, the back and front of the instrument as well as the bridge, nut and belt hook to give your buyer a more complete view of your Chapman Stick - cheers.

I'm going to throw a wrench into the works because the original OP does not exactly deserve some of these comments here.

Ok - this one: I would tend to agree with DavidWS. To start, consider that you are charging $300 more than a new instrument.

Tell me, how many YEARS is one now waiting for a new Stick ??

So, $300 more than what a new Stick costs would not be a deal breaker for me, in fact if it were something I was after I'd jump on it.

I think I paid around $2500 each for my Ironwoods, maybe the newer one from '85 was a little less...

That's a reasonable price in my opinion if the instrument is in really really really nice condition.

Of interest, I prefer the old Ironwoods to the newer Sticks, but that's just me.

Good Luck !!

Currently I'm at 27 months and counting for a Bamboo 12 string Grand with Stickups.
I exchanged emails with Jeff last week and he is unable to give any sort of reliable estimate for how much longer it will be.
N.B. I'm not complaining - I prefer a straight "don't know" like I got to any type of optimistic but groundless guesstimate.

I know what you mean Big George. Last year I paid more than the OP is asking for a 2009 10 string Graphite... My offer was less than its seller initially wanted & was calculated based on what I'd need to pay for a close equivalent new Stick (taking into acount a flight case and 20% import duty into Europe/UK). My offer was accepted and I had that Stick within 10 days. :D

I then sold the 1985 Ironwood I'd started with for the same as I'd paid for it (1200 GBP).

When my "on order" bamboo arrives I may decide to 'specialise' in 12 string and advertise the 10 string Graphite (on Stickist, of course).

I'd be perfectly happy for it to stay here, but if I end up not using it then I think I'd feel it would be better for "The Stick Community" for it to be out there and used than sat here in a case unused[1]. Is anyone going to suggest that I put the asking price at less than I paid, especially in the current market?

[1] Just to be clear it is not currently "unused". :D

Supply and demand.
You have to consider what is available
and how many people want the same product.
The price of things are going up, all over the world.
