Post SOLD: Chapman Stick Nr: 480
Hello, World!

This is not my stick, but of an acquaintance of mine. That being said, I'd be more than happy to arrange the payment, packing, and shipping for someone that lives abroad. The price for everything (minus shipping) is 2640CHF (ca. 2800EUR or 2800USD)

The 90's exotic wood (white oak) "Chapman Stick" with production number "480"

This instrument has 10 sides, 5 bass, and 5 guitar sides. It's in wonderful condition and came from someone who never actually used it so is as good as new.

Specs:
    Stickup Stereo Pickup Module.
Screw (height) adjustable nut and bridge.
    Black closed machine heads
    Dimensions 45 1/4" (115cm) x 3 1/4" (8.3cm) x 1 3/4" (4.5cm)
    Neck thickness 7/8" (2.2cm), scale length 36" (91.5cm)
    String spacing .320" (8.13mm), Group spacing .430" (10.92mm)

The stick comes with a flight case and a dual-TS to TRS cable. I have some books and string sets for sale https://www.stickist.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=16229, which can be sent together to save on the shipping.

I am willing to ship worldwide, as long as the costs are paid by the buyer. Shipping to the US (for example) could be around 125CHF. But please contact me with your Country to get a more accurate estimate.

Cheers,
Walt

Hey. Not to nit pick, but tell your friend this Stick would be an early 90s model, after the serial numbers started over with rounded headstocks, but between truss rods (1990) and adjustable bridges (1992). So most likely around 1991.

And the wood: White Oak. Which might be exotic for Europe, I guess.

Good luck on the sale!

Good eye on the details, Brian. I will point out that the serial numbers did start over at 001 with the one-piece hardwood construction in 1989, but they still had the squared off headstock. The rounded headstock arrives in 1992. For more details see the Timeline of Stick Advancements:

https://stick.com/about/history/timeline/

This instrument is not “rare” but typical for the vintage. Oak was one of the first one-piece hardwoods Emmett started using in this series...

The price? $2800? Seems maybe high for it’s age. A brand new Railboard costs less. Prospective buyers should ask for an audio test to show that the pickup works and that the pots are not sticking or have any dead spots. If they haven't been turned in years they could be gunked up. You would also want to see if there are any frets that have lifted, or if the instrument has twisted in any way. The size of the rods changed in 1993, with the larger rods set more securely in the rounded channels. The original rods were glued into a half-diameter slot, which was slightly less secure. The fixed bridge means light gauge strings only for true intonation.

All that said. If it has none of these issues it will probably be an excellent instrument. The oak instruments were very light weight.

Completely coincidentally, there's another of these early 90's instruments for sale here in Sweden, at an IMHO outrageous price point of $4000 (or €4000, now that the USD and EUR are at almost the same rate here).

That one is being misidentified as a ~1976 instrument, but it has fret rods and the round nameplate, so I'm pretty positive that that's also early 90's in the reset s/n range. Serial is a bit lower than 480. Same type of knobs on the pickup too.

$4000? Yeah...when Emmett died, I assumed all of the closet Stick owners (literally...people who've owned a Stick for years, having it in a closet unused) would assume their instrument was now double in value. Which is funny since brand new Sticks with the latest options are priced way less than $4000, if you can wait a year or so.

But people out there will pay. In January 2021 I sold my original Stick (1996 built 10-string) on Reverb. I purposely priced it with a little negotiating room, plus the 7% Reverb keeps. Within 48 hours someone made a full price offer. I was a little shocked, but I'm not complaining. I tried to sell it here on Stickist.com for a few hundred dollars less...

Good catch. Definitely sounds like a 1989-92 era Stick.

Here it is, by the way. As a fun quirk, the ad text is in English although the classifieds site itself is in Swedish:
https://www.blocket.se/annons/sodermanl ... /103010958

The SEK is at 10,60 SEK <-> 1 USD and similar for EUR so maybe it's more like $3700 / €3700, but still...

About a year ago, I saw a 1990s Grand Stick on a local classifieds site in Norway for about $6,500. After a month it was gone. We definitely have an excess of demand over supply.

So, it looks like 2800 doesn't sound as high anymore when compared to 4000-6500...
