I was at the Orlando Science Center over the weekend. They are having an exibit called "Guitar: the instrument that rocked the world." I immediately thought of this thread when I saw a guitar called the Bond Electroglide. It uses a stepped fretboard made of aluminium. Seems similar to what you describe.

Cool, that is another way to arrive at the same place. I've been thinking a less steep angle might work well. I know fret wear is not much of an issue with stainless steel, but I don't care much for the sound or feel of stainless frets on guitar.
