recommendations on small bass preamp
I'm looking for a small bass preamp stomp box.
I already have a Boss ME-50B, which is a great unit overall, but is a little overkill, and is taking up too much room on a small pedalboard I'm building for gigging in small spaces.
I'm considering the Tech21 VT or Hartke pedals.
Any other recommendations?
Thanks!
Greg

Re: recommendations on small bass preamp
Hi Siriusbliss If you are interested in a small bass preamp then i would recommend the SP2 from sfxsound. A London based company that are making wicked little preamps and fx pedals (and modifications to existing pedals) as well as custom shop built devices. The SP2 is really small and accepts a stereo input so a Stick or any stereo instrument can be used and has a stereo or mono output. Theres no reason why a mono instrument cannot be used also as well as 2 mono instruments/inputs to a mono output. The preamp sounds really really good. So much better than so many that i have tried that are a lot more money and bigger. A wide frequency response, massive headroom and well........cool sound. There is an audio sample on the link of some Stick playing going through the box. I love it. I have had a custom made Stick preamp made by SFX as well that sounds amazing with all sorts of intriguing switching capabilities. Check out the link below. Regards Pascal http://www.sfxsound.co.uk/mainpage.asp?page=sp2

Thanks for the link Pascal; I'm sure this will get a lot of interest from Stick players. Nice to hear your playing too, as always. Cheers, Andy

Re: recommendations on small bass preamp
In june, I got in touch with Max, the man behind Sfxsound. He made for me two custom routing units, one that he delivered to me two weeks ago and the second one next september. This guy is very easy to work with, always checking if he understood what you REALLY want. I ordered too a SP2 preamp, just to give it a try. This little box sounds just incredible. The preamp is a bit different from the BassLab preamps, a little less smoother I think, but the array of frequencies boost/cut with the turn of a knob is really impressive, and the preamps are providing a very hot signal (I re-discovered some of my effect pedals, such as enveloppe filters). And moreover, a big pro is that it runs with a 9v power supply. It's very easy to carry in the gigbag (it's the size of the 1-knob MXR effect pedal enclosure). I couldn't be more satisfied with it!

The SP2 looks nice! I am currently using the K&K Dual Channel Pro for both the bass and melody with a snap-on 9v adapter. It has low/mid/high trim pots for both channels, sounds great, and is really compact for a compact pedal board. I found this review by another stick player.

Re: recommendations on small bass preamp
I'd been using the K&K Dual Channel Pro for some time and was satisfied with it, but got an SP2 on account of the glowing reviews here...and I must say the sound is significantly better...thanks, PascalG and grozoiel, for the recommendation.
Mad Monk.

Glad to see you're satisfied with it. I still use mine with my rig.

Re: recommendations on small bass preamp
I'm using the SP2 as a recording preamp. It compares favourably to the K&K and is on par with more expensive units, although the eq is basic. There's plenty of gain for driving even the stingiest of soundcards. Cheers, Andy.
