Post Emergency String Repair
Tonight, I was installing a MIDI pickup on my Railboard.
While re-installing the strings, the lowest one broke at the tuner.

I made the repair with an old nylon string from another instrument.
See attached photo for details. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Neat.

When converetd to uncrossed parallel 4ths I needed to shift 1 2 3 4 5 6 to 7 8 9 10 11 12.

Since I'd neatly trimmed the strings when first fitting them, 7 (previoulsy 1), 8 (previoulsy 2) were too short (9 was just long enough).

To handle that without needing new strings I added extensions using this approach

nice, never tried it. I'd THINK the sheet bend wld be the right knot (it's designed for joining dissimilar lines, but hey, whatever gets you there.

what's the old saw "if you can't tie a knot, tie a lot!!" :D
I'm around a lot of mariners and I'm pretty sure they look at my tying and shake their heads...I only know this b/c I've seen em look at my knot tying and shake their heads...hey YOU try tying a bowline with one hand underwater!!
I can remember about 4 knots at any one time...if I learn a new one, I have to forget an old one

Yes a sheet bend would be good for chord or rope, but wire is probably a different matter?

I'm not far off the same?

Figure of eight, clove hitch, half hitch & wagoner's hitch are my go to knots for most things. Plus a couple of others if I pause for thought.

I've tied a monkey's fist knot a couple of time to make a decorative end, but both times straight from the book!

I thought I was using a square (reef) knot?

Supposedly a carrick bend knot works well. I e never had the occasion to try it though

Reef knots are often handy. Sort of pretty too (& hence easy to tell if you have it correct).

Sheepshank is another favourite.

A thing I love about the clove hitch is that if you can drop it on to a bollard, post or spike you can 'tie' it by just making a couple of loops putting one under the other (order is importamt) then place the pair over the post. So simple. :D

yep you appear to be. the sheet bend differs in that the free (working) end get passed under the standing end ABOVE the loop of the second line, not through the loop in the second line. What's nice about that is the load puts locking pressure across the free end (and I think it's slightly easier to tie!)

not sure, I mean the sheet bend works on dissimilar materials (different pliabilities) well
I'd think it might be actually more effective on wire than, say a square not b/c it tension locks (so it's not purely relying on the raw friction of the cordage casing) . A sheet bend is a true bend.

There are things like the fisherman's (and double)you use that to tie leaders on to fishing line ...it's a little more complicated and gets tied wrong a lot. but it's a good one and a true bend
there is the Albright knot but that's a pretty wrappy twisty is like a full splice

I was thinking sheet bend b/c it's easy to tie even in the dark and is quick to tie and works well with dissimilar lines for that emergency string repair

it might be one for the IGKT (international guild of knot tyers ) over at https://igkt.net/

:D :D :D :D

holy crap! I haven't seen that in probably 30+ years but I still remember the tension - wasn't it the Dreyfuss character (the marine biologist) who did the tie off?
