Post Parametric EQ
I would like to learn how to use the parametric EQ on my Helix to shape tone differently on the bass and treble sides of my Railboard. I wonder if any of you good Stick folk are doing something like this and, if you are, could you share your settings to give me some place to start. Of course, advice is welcome, even if your parametric eq is not a helix.

Specifically, what do you suggest for the TREBLE side for:

LOW FREQ
LOW Q
LOW GAIN
MID FREQ
MID Q
MID GAIN
HIGH FREQ
HIGH Q
HIGH GAIN

And,of course, the same question for the BASS SIDE.

FINALLY, Where do you put the EQ in your chain?

Thanks for any help.

Robert

Before you get started, check out this link.

My basic setup for the Helix Floor.
- 10 band Graphic equalizer
- Dynamic hall reverb
- Impulse response
- LA Studio compressor

I use iZotope Ozone for some of my projects.

Thanks for that! I had already found and read that great site on EQ. I’m interested that you have chosen the 10 band graphic instead of parametric. Any special reason? Any chance you could share your settings? I don’t yet do the IR thing. Do you have different paths for the two sides?.

At last year’s Stick Camp In Vancouver, we had an excellent Skype presentation from Greg, which convinced me that EQ really matters on the Stick. But he was using plugins and I have not been able to get my head around translating when he was doing to the Helix world.

Im in learning mode here and would love to see a successful setup to give me something to work from.

Cheers, Robert

The 10 band graphic equalizer is what I grew up with in the 60's.
I use the parametric EQ in Ozone because of the visual waveform data.
It allows me to visually see what I am hearing.

So many things affect tone. The instrument, the strings, the tuning,
the cables, the amp, the speakers, the effects, the room environment,
the person's perception of sound. So many factors.

At the end of the day, it comes down to personal preference.
I change my EQ settings from time to time, based on my mood.
There is no magic bullet and sometimes EQ is not required.
Don't overthink it or over use it. Your ears will guide you.

For the best tones, I believe that impulse responses are the key.
I use them on my Kemper Stage, Tonex Pedal and Helix Floor.
They are a sonic snapshot of someone's equipment and environment.
I use EQ to fine tune how my equipment meshes with theirs.

Quite a while ago, I uploaded one of my Helix patches and IR.

Did you spot the 10 Band EQ setting for bass side that Olivier posted about a month ago in response to a query in another topic?

That was for HX Stomp, but I believe it's the same engine underneath the hood (I was certainly able to try out the settings on my Helix LT).

I agree with you that some melody side suggestions might be nice too, for those of us with less experience. Yes we need to find our own preference, but it's nice to have a reasonable starting point to explore from. :D

10 band EQs are easier to setup.
The Dynamic Hall Reverb is excellent.
IRs sound better than amp/cab blocks.
I prefer the LA Studio Comp at the end of the chain.

It really comes down to personal preference.
I experiment until something jumps out at me. 8-)
