I have been using those "pool noodles" for years and have as yet to see one disintegrate, if that's your concern. They're built to withstand sun, chlorine. I've had them in the backseat of my car "noodling" around waiting for projects and no problems. They hold up and don't "flake-off" or any such matter.
And in dire circumstances can be used for a floatation device.
