I'm curious if anyone has ever tried to make a monopod Stick stand?

I have a Manfrotto monopod that might work well.
It's strong enough that I can put my full weight on it.
I'll have to figure out a way to attach it to the Stick.

If it works for Cellos, it should work for a Stick.

My first thought is that Cellos have wide base for the mount of the 'endpin' to attach to and a hollow body to accommodate the unused portion.

Substantially different to our situation.

However, I think that various electronic double basses & cells have end pins, and they don't have large bodies so perhaps they'd be good things to look at for ideas?

I'm going to try out the idea, just to see if it works or not.
I found an old tripod that was missing the head portion.
So, I dismantled it into three square shaped monopods.

The biggest part of the problem, is how to mount it?
I've attached a photo of what I've got so far.

I've started designing the mount for the monopod.

I had some 'marine grade' Baltic Birch in my scrap bin.
It was only 3/8" thick, so I glued two pieces together.
I've chosen 4" X 7" X 3/4" as the base for the mount.

I'm going to machine 1/8" off on the inside in order
to provide a lip on either side where it attaches to the Stick.
This will keep the base mount from wandering side to side.

My plan is to fasten the base mount to the Stick with 3M's VHB tape.
The (Very High Bond) tape is extremely strong. I've tested it many times.

Once the base mount is finished and mounted,
I can then fasten the monopod to the base mount,
without damaging or altering the original Stick wood.

The other reason for the base mount, is that I require
some space between the monopod and the Stick
to maneuver my thumb while playing.

The base mount only attaches to the lower portion
of the Stick where the pickups are located.
The monopod actually protrudes further up,
so this is why the offset is required in order to play properly.

I have to wait 24hrs until the glue dries, before I can
move on to the next step. I think this idea will work.
If not, then I may require a few screws to mount
the base to the actual Stick wood.

I think that it will be really cool to have a Stick
with a telescopic monopod stand that stows away
when not in use. Fully adjustable for sitting or standing.

I've attached a photo of today's progress. It's starting to take shape. I've have to do some router work on the wooden edges of the monopod base mount and I need to stain or paint the wood. The monopod is firmly clamped into the base mount via 10 wood screws. I still have to finalize how the base mount will be attached to the Stick. VHB tape is a good contender, but I'm not ruling out some sort of mechanical attachment.

I've been thinking about this as well. My plan is to put the belt hook over a piece of wood (like a lap bar), but I'll angle the wood down and attach a stop which will stabilize the right side of the hook. On the left of the hook I'll attach a pole, with enough distance from the hook that I can adjust its angle until I find the right balance point. Hopefully front/back adjustment isn't required. My clamped-together prototype seems to work!

Hey Paul, I can't wait to see your project. I spent some time working on mine tonight. I used a vibrating palm sander to put a nice finish on my wooden base mount. After that, I spent some time figuring out how to mount my router to a workmate workbench. Instead of moving the router around the part, I want to move the part around a fixed router. I will use the router outside tomorrow, so that I don't have to clean up the shop. I found an old can of Minwax oak stain polyurethane finish to use as a protective coating for the base mount.

I'm working on other projects at the same time. My 4" dash speakers in the Sprinter van were shot, so I bought some new ones from Skar Audio. I'm not that impressed with them and was a bit disappointed in my purchase. I can't send them back because I had to cut the metal tabs off of them to make them fit into the Sprinter dash.

I looked around the house and found some 8 ohm Kenwood 4" speakers that have huge magnets in them. I read somewhere that 8 ohm speakers in a car stereo amp actually sound better than the original 4 ohm ones. I'm not sure about that, but tomorrow I will give that a try and see if they sound better than what I already have . I want to use the Sprinter van stereo to play my Stick via the Zoom H4N audio interface with effects. It will hopefully sound good enough for camping trips.

I think that the best thing to fix this on the belt hook (!) would be a sort of cradle like in this video:

so you don't have to modify anything and it can be used with any regular Stick.

That sure is a nice Stick stand. I can see why this would work for a tripod floor base, but when using a monopod, the offset angles might not be desirable. The version that I'm putting together keeps the monopod as close to the body of the Stick as possible while still allowing room for a thumb to navigate behind the fingerboard at the same time. I wanted to keep my design as closely aligned to the Stick body angle as possible.

It was just an input as to how the whole thing could work together with the existing hardware.
Perhaps you will need a double spike to keep the Stick from spinning while you're playing?
Or a sort of a "flat spike"???
I never tried a thing like that, but the idea is worth trying.
