I should have posted sooner, but for your next job, a "electric knife" (the turkey carver) is supposed to work well. Good suggestion! Now that you mention it, I recall doing that years ago when making some foam cushions.

But really, I'd only recommend that for the softer polyurethane foam. For the polyethylene foam that would would work, but it would be much less precise and controllable than the utility knife.

It did, then I put that small block under the bridge-end, so it's probably about 1/8"/3mm above the support now. I'm not concerned about it, but I could slice off a bit of scrap and slip it under there. If I was putting it away for storage for a long time I might do that, but for day-to-day use, I'm not concerned about it being supported only on the ends.

That's as I suspected when you said you'd raised the bridge end. I think your call on the situation is perfectly reasonable.

If you do add a bit, I guess you can make a pretty neat slice with that foam?

Your scoop for the belt hook looked very even. :)

Oh yeah - unlike the soft polyurethane foam, this stuff is very firm and really easy to work with. That scoop was just free-handed, sawing slightly with the utility knife.

Okay - one little tweak.

I noticed that the way I did this, the headstock is actually resting on the tuners. Probably not something to worry about, but I was thinking while unlikely that there could be a chance that it could get knocked out of tune. So...I cut a little wedge-shaped block out of some scrap and fastened it so that it supports the headstock between the two outside tuners. As per @DavidWS's question, I also put a small block in the center support so the entire length is supported. Again, I don't think this was going to cause a problem, but since it took me all of 10 minutes to do this (if that) I figured "why not?"

@SteveS Thank you. You've answered the question that had formed in my head over night before I'd even asked it. :D

I agree with the 'electric knife' for cutting foam. I bought one at a garage sale for a couple of dollars and use it for cutting Rockwool insulation.

This looks brilliant. Can't wait to try it with my own case. Thanks for posting!

Sure!

And...I have to say that having all that leftover foam has not been a problem. I've already used some to make a base to lift the FRFR speaker I use off the floor. Much neater than the cardboard box I was using! I placed the Roland HandSonic drum pad on top of that speaker, and the cardboard box put it a little too high. A "frame" made of that foam was the perfect height and still seems to prevent too much "boominess" from the speaker.

Hi Steve

I just did this with my old Stick case, and it's brilliant! Thanks so much for sharing your process: your instructions were clear and detailed, and it worked like a charm. :)

Supposedly non electric ones work ok also. Have not tried it though
