I am sooooooooooooo behind the times, for many many years my go to portable machine was the - I think - Marantz PMD 650 ???? maybe - anyhow, it was a small two track portable cassette machine with DBX noise reduction, used that with an external batt pwd pre-amp, and a stereo head audio technica microphone, recorded a ton of concerts [with bands permission and blessings] and had real good results with it.
[I seem to think I got mine towards the end of that series production run, as cassette was being phased out for digital]
Later on, I got the digital version of the Marantz PMD series machines, but even that is still ancient by todays standards.
I'm definately looking for a superior audio quality field recording machine [I came across a portable DAT many years ago, what I fool I was to pass on that...] so I will be re-reading and researching all the devices recommended here in this thread...
*I know I have an older Zoom 4 track that's like the size of a small calculator, but it was far too complicated for me to be able to figure out.
I should see if my old Nagra 1 track 1/4in machine from the late 1960s [??] still powers up, that thing was incredible when it came to sound quality !!

I've tested it with several of my studio microphones.
I'm very impressed with it so far.

- I'm powering it with a Sony NP-F970 (6.6 Amp) battery.
- I've ordered the Sony MDR7506 PRO Stereo Headphones for it.
- As well as a PEAK DESIGN slide lite camera strap to tote it around.

I have had the Sony MDR7506 for 9 yrs and the only thing that wore out was the vinyl coating on the ear cushions. Then I smashed the 1/8" plug a few weeks ago. I have to solder a new one on (tiny) but I bought a new pair - same price as 9yrs ago $99. Seems they're still a best seller at Guitar Center and I love them for Stick practice (and everything else). I miss the softness of the vinyl-less ear cushions!

FYI, I decided on the Zoom H8. I'll let you know how it works for the Stick and as an computer interface in a few weeks!

My Sony MDR7506 headphones arrived. I love them, with the exception of the 10' coil cord. I'm going to replace this cord with a 1/8" 3.5mm headphone jack, so that I can use whatever length of patch cord that I desire.

I've also tested my Westone in-ear monitors on the Zoom F6 and they are very comparable to the Sony headset.

I use the Rode NT1A Studio mic for recording, but ordered the Rode NTG5 for outdoor use. I like these mics because of the very low 'self noise' when no sound is being recorded.

BTW - the replacement ear cushions are very inexpensive. I replaced the cushions on my Shure SRH240 headset this week for the total cost of $8 CAD.

The Rode NTG5 mic arrived and I tested it with the Zoom F6 field recorder.
It sounds great. I had a small issue with one of the accessories.

The PG2-R (pistol grip shock mount) was missing a bushing in the swivel mechanism. This caused the swivel adjustment to not work properly. (i.e. the 1/4" steel bolt was passing thru a 3/8" brass hole). I fixed this issue by cutting a section of a common plastic disposable pen and fabricating my own bushing. I'm satisfied with the repair.

I'm very happy with the Zoom F6 so far.

My next purchase for the Zoom F6 field recorder will be the Rode NT-SF1 Ambisonic mic.
