Helix is such fantastic platform, and since the latest update it seems really mature and fully-featured. My only gripe is that I wish they would release a smaller unit that has the full DSP power of the Helix Floor.

That was the reason I returned the Helix Stomp. I tried it out and it's a great pedal. The sound quality and the selection of amps and effects are exceptional.
But I had hoped to use it as a stand-alone solution with my Stick. But I found that two effects chains with amp simulations are too resource-hungry, there was no DSP left for interesting combinations of effects. Maybe we'll have to wait for the next generation...

Yeah that's a pretty good example why the Floor is more suited for Stick

Anyone who's interested in a Helix, HX Stomp, etc. (perhaps upgrading?) should stay tuned in the next few months. The Neural DSP Quad Cortex is the hot new modeler kid on the block that's just about to send out the first batch of units to people who pre-ordered one. My guess is that we'll see a lot of used Helix units up for sale and the value proposition might become even better.

I've certainly been very curious about the Quad Cortex for a while now. As much as I love my Stomp, I'm getting ready to upgrade to a unit with a bit more flexibility and more DSP. The reviews that I've been reading and watching almost unanimously say that the QC is second only to the Axe FX 3 as far as modelers go, and it is in a much lower price bracket at $1600 USD (the same price as the Helix).

I have a feeling that the Helix will come down in price once the QC is widely available, which would make purchasing one more appealing, but time will tell.

Without taking the thread into a heated discussion about paid promotional videos vs. the perception of honesty of opinions with the various gear-oriented YouTube channels, I'm more interested in reading forums like this one where I can see regular musician's and hobbyist's opinions about using the QC. Also, I'll be interested to see some blind comparisons between the QC with other modelers. My prediction is that the QC won't necessarily be "better" but perhaps easier for some people to get the sounds they want due to the clever user interface.

But I'm almost certain there will be a number of cheap Helixes, Axe FX's, etc. for sale around summer time.

On the melody side, I use a wet/dry dual path. The wet side is using a plate reverb, dual delay and spring reverb in the chain, ending with Fender Twin Reverb IR and an LA Studio Comp. The Comp is not being used as a comp but helps to even out the tone before reaching the JC-120 physical amp. This combination is better than any of the reverbs that I've seen so far. I use it a lot.

BTW - I have all of the knobs turned off, on the JC-120 and plug in at the rear of the amp, to bypass the JC-120 pre-amps. This results in an ultra quiet noise floor, while using only the Helix Floor as my pre-amp.

My favorite new addition is the Retro Reel plugin. What a wonderful analog tape sim that fattens up your tone ever so subtly. Very nice.

I recently put together a pedalboard for guitar with a Bluguitar Amp1 and HX Effects.

I’m considering swapping out the Effects for a Stomp XL so I can dual-purpose the pedalboard for use with my Stick as well. (I’m currently just using plugins with my studio monitors).

Thoughts? How are you all still liking your Stomps with the Stick? I’m still concerned about DSP limitations for the dual signal paths.
