Post Output difference
I do have a 12 strings (rosewood) and a railboard 10 strings. I noticed a difference with the output. I need more power to amplify my railboard. Do you experiment the same thing on your side? This message is, of course, to people who have both sticks. Do you think I need a preamp for the railboard? The outpout difference is quite important. The tone is great though.

Yes, I've noticed the same thing. The 40 year old stick sounds better with less amplification. My Railboard is a different animal. I like both very much and each has its own unique features.

I recall my Railboard's pickups as having been weak when used passively. I used it in active mode almost exclusively; my mixer made it easy, and the tone was beautiful.

The active mode where phantom power is used to boost the output like the way the Stereo Cloudlifter uses phantom power to boost the output of old ribbon mics. This Cloudlifter type circuit is built-in to the Railboard but needs phantom power to work. If you use a small mixer like a lot of guys do, it should have phantom power. If you're going straight into pedals and amps without phantom power, you can get an inline stereo phantom power supply but then you need Lo-Z to Hi-Z adaptors to get from XLR back to 1/4" to plug into pedals and amps. What I'd do instead as an alternative to phantom power is just grab an SP2 Stick pre amp. There's a lengthy thread about it here: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=11972

SP2 user here! I actually stopped using phantom power since I got it. Originally bought to use with the stickup I eventually started using it with the railboard also. Better tone going thru there. ImageAfter a while I just bought an ART split/mix4 also and now connect both sticks there so that both can permanently share the same SP2.
