I've just read about the Railboard p.u. @ Stick Ents. My naive question. Unless you're going direct into a board or DAW for recording, why would you bother w/ phantom power? Just plug it in regular to your effects units and into your amps and wail away? Those Villex p.u.s are hotter than active anyway? Are you playing thaaaat far from your amp?

Boat is correct. In order to activate the active mode on the RB, phantom power is required. I will use both active and passive modes. Since active is an option, why use just passive? I would be ignoring half of the instrument’s pickup functionality.

I have a railboard. The only difference between the two modes is the volume at witch the signal comes out of the pickup. With phantom it’s louder. Just that. Emmett says the signal to noise ratio is the same so not even that is an advantage of the active mode. I used it active for about a year. Until I got me a sp2. The preamp boosts the signal to the level I want and from there everything’s the same so I just go passive these days.

Greg has a video demonstrating the different RB sounds. I watched it a while ago, but it may compare the sound of active vs. passive. Watch it and judge if you can hear a difference.

each interface is going to give you a different sound quality. Plugging into a high-quality mic pre with XLR via phantom power will giver you a different sound than plugging into a passive 1/4 input. I think it would be difficult to do an apples to apples comparison. I love the sound of both ways. The R-Block is truly distinctive...

I went ahead and purchased the Personus preamp. What a deal for less than $300 (discounted for President’s Day sale). I bought it for use with my soon-to-be-completed Grand Railboard because it has phantom power. I replaced the stock Chinese tube with a Mesa Boogie preamp tube. It sounds great with my other sticks....very warm buttery tone.
