Post EHX HOG vs SY-300
Looking at possibly adding one of these to my rig. Any pros or cons on either? Anyone using one or the other or both?

Looking for some sounds I can't get with my key9 or b9.

Thanks, ad.

Post Re: EHX HOG vs SY-300
I found the SY-300 to track faster than the Key-9, which left me wanting.

The SY-300 has a boatload of features. Expression, Stereo CTRL out and, it's a multi-effects pedal. However, it is a massive pedal -

There's also a boatload of sounds you will never, and I do mean never-ever, to sound good. The real win with the SY-300 in my book was not needing a hex pickup to get some new sounds, but some of them are just whack.

IMHO, one good sound is all you need. Dripstone Cavern was one that I was especially found of and customized a few patches based on this one. Unlike the Big Sky, I'm not willing to part with the SY-300 given it's versatility.

I know the guys in Karnivool love the Hog. Heard nothing but good things about it - although, it's more of manual process with getting a sound and it's not a multi-effects unit. So, I like the sy-300, but man, it was expensive and it is a beast of a pedal in weight and size.

I might have asked this before. How well can the SY-300 do the following sounds:
1. strings
2. piano (at least electric)
3. organ (like a Hammond)?

I would love to get away from using a synth and it seems like we should be at least technologically close to this.

The Hog II can do things that will blow minds, it's a really fun pedal in my opinion, definitely one of my favourites! (Then again, I'm nobody)

1- I would say quite well (depends on what you call strings) if you mean a nice chords in the background -then yes

2 piano- no. You need real MIDI to get real piano sound

3- Hammond..mm tricky- I guess you need to tweak around and get something quite close

Remember: the sy300 doesn't have "real" instruments as in MIDI
It has 3 oscillators (plus your dry signal)-and the options you can get are literally endless.

Over at http://www.vguitarforums.com/ there are some who have wrangled some pretty good sounds out of the SY-300. Mostly for guitar, but it would probably be worth playing around with some of the patches to see how they translate to Stick.

The SY-300 excels with the 70's type Moog / ARP synth pads, many of them reminding me of sounds that Yes or Zawinul might favor. Lots of control / expression options with the Oscillators, that's a deep set function that many are still exploring that is mostly unique to this pedal.

It has a decent organ sound and using CTRL-2 to flip on the rotor never gets old. The organ tones could be explored a little more, so if I was grading it, I would give it a B+. It's listenable and playable.

There is no piano. I was hoping for a decent Rhodes sound, although I never did find anything close. I was hoping for that glassy overdriven tone that Billy Payne got, but so far, have not discovered. I'm not selling it, it's too far out and groovy and it's a pretty solid, albeit expensive, multi-effects unit.

I vacillate between getting a hog or sy, or just using midi guitar and a synth. I'll have to do some experimenting with the tracking on midi guitar, it wasn't great last time I tried with pedal steel, but that has tons of overtones and microtones....

So from what I'm seeing here is that not many folks are happy with the Key9, B9 or C9. This makes me sad as I was really hoping those would deliver and was planning on purchasing at least one of these. To those that have used the EHX pedals is the issue "Tracking" or just overall sound? Does it sound better 100% pedal vs a mix of your Stick tone with the effect?
