Methinks I'm still gonna go with the Pod X3 Live.

One of the things that puts the X3 Live in my sights is that it sends multiple tracks across the USB cable. From memory, you get input 1 & 2 dry, as well as separate stereo outputs for 1 & 2, and a final stereo mixed output. This means you can adjust your mix after you've recorded a run through.

Do the BOSS units send multiple tracks across the USB cable? I can't seem to find the manuals online.

Post Re: BOSS launches GT-10 and GT-10B
I tried the GT-10 a bit at NAMM. Definitely some cool sounds available with the dual effect chain approach (which I've been doing a while myself, but with two separate effects processors) but I don't think it supports two inputs if you want to have an effect chain for each side of the Stick (and advantage in the X3's favor). I might be inclined to still have two different effects processors, each with dual chain support, for the most flexibility.

However I'm having this "mid-life effects crisis" where using multi-effects on the tone my Acoustic Image amp produces just seems to cheapen the sound somewhat. I'm not so much concerned about having a million amp and cabinet and stomp box models but just to do a few different things with high quality. So I'm wondering, if I want to get more unusual sounds, if I should just get a smaller collection of higher-end effects or maybe look at things like TC Electronic or Eventide in the future. The VG-99 looks real interesting but one of the things that turned me off about the VG-8 was that the digital models sounded fake and sterile to me. Am I turning into a purist tone snob????

Hi Rob,

I think you might be reaching a positive change, rather than a "crisis".
You've got a great instrument and some great tunes, and that's all you really need. It's always struck me as a bit of a contradiction that so many Stickists become almost obsessive about effects, when the instrument is still largely unexplored.

Playing the instrument live is an eye-opener in many ways. One of the things I'm constantly told is how good the Stick sounds. Good in a different way than a guitar (and I play an older Stick through a cheap amp most of the time).

Cheers,
Andy

I'm
Slowly, I sold all my gear (and since I play music, I have tried many many multi-effects) and carefully tried, choose and purchased a very few pedals (like the one you could see on Free Hands) 8-) , as I tend to play with only two or three different sounds all the time ;)
All I have is analog effects (wah, delay and chorus from Maxon and an overdrive + the StepABout) : to me, the sound is far better than all the multi-effects I owned (OK, I've not tried some Rolls-Royce like TC Electronic or Eventide racks) and I've succeed in shaping my sound as I was hearing it in my head. But the drawback is obviously the lack of flexibility.

And I agree with adde65 says about how good the Stick sounds (hey, Adde65, nice video on Youtube) ;)

I played sometimes in front of audience, with or without my gear. And everytime I played, the public is really amazed by the quality of sound coming from the PA, despite my frequent mistakes ;) (tourists are very kind in France).
Maybe hearing the sound of the Stick doesn't amazed us after all these years of training in the bedroom, but for the public, it's a really new approach of music and I do believe that they find it amazing to be able to produce these intricate and cristal-clear lines and notes with only two hands (and 6 or 8 fingers, depending of your technique choices) ;)

When I'm in a GAS mode, I always think about that (and I save money) :D
(hope these lignes are understandable, the more I get older, the more I've some difficulties to write my thoughts in English)

Well I did try an unorthodox approach with the GT8. Since you order the fx chain, I used to plug the bass side on the return loop and put it at the end of the fx chain. So I guess that you can use 1 effect chain for the melody, leaving the fx return loop out of the chain and the 2nd effect chain starting with the return loop (and leaving out the main input or level it to 0). This will give you 2 'independent' chains. I don't know about the inpedance of the fx return loop...

I love the beauty of the natural Stick sound with maybe just a touch or reverb but in my band situation (Rock) I need to make my Stick sound like a bass and rock guitar so effects are a must. Last tune I learnt on it for my band was the FOO FIGHTERS tune Pretender! :-) In a non-rock situation however I agree that less is more when using effects on the Stick.

Bingo!.... The Eventide Eclipse. Hands down, the most incredible sounding fx unit on the planet! I highly recommend this wonder box. 8-) 8-)
