What is the difference in the two pickups and why does one choose one over the other. What does one get for $200 cost diference. I'm a new stickist wanting to buy a 12 string grand. My music I want to play at this time is folk and celtic/Irish. Does the genre of music make any difference? Please, can anyone give some good advice.

Spend a good half-hour watching & listening to this on a computer with good speakers (or headphones). Pickup choices: there's no right or wrong. It's all personal preference.

For what you want to play I would consider the Stickup as well. It's the simplest pickup offered as far as bells and whistles but it has a complex and beautiful tone. Check out Andy Salvanos or Youenn on YouTube and you'll hear what I'm talking about. Lotsa guys prefer the Stickup.

The difference between the two pickups, the ACTv2 and the PASv4 is that the
"ACTv2 stands for active and you will need a battery and "PAS" stands for passive,
and needs no battery :geek:.

Also with those two pickups you get various tone controls.
Is the PASv4 better for the extra money? Well there is something about the sound
that is different and good imo but I prefer the ACTv2 because of the simplicity;
what you get is a volume and a tone control for each side, bass and melody
similar to an electric guitar X 2 ;).

The real consideration is if you are thinking about the "Stickup" as well is
with that pickup (volume controls only) you may want to get some sort of preamp.
I say "may" because with modern amplifiers and effects processors you probably
can adjust your sound to your liking without a preamp :| . Or simply, if you just plug in your Stick w/ a Stickup into you amp it will work just fine.

The Stickup should really be on the list though if the sound of the bass is what
attracted you to the Stick :ugeek:.

I wouldn't say that. We know it's got a great bass sound but it can be every bit as expressive and delicate on the melody strings as any other Stick pickup. It's a great choice for a solo Stickist like Andy here who has a Celtic thing going on.

The ACTV2 is active, so consider that with whatever amplifier you may be using.

yes. The Stickup really does shine with a decently matched preamp - like completely changes the tone.

Not sure how much of an affect the other pickups have when using a preamp, but the difference in tone when using one with a Stickup is striking (I was using a Rane Sp-13 and just loved it)

EDIT: blep

The op asked for a comment on the $200 price diff - between the ACTV2 and PASV4. The EMG's are not cheap, but the Villex is a 4-pickup block with additional tone shaping. That's got to be part of the cost difference.

...wow, a lot of best tips here so far...

...for me the Actv-2 has simply one minus, the need for a battery...

The best thing I can offer regarding this is a video of mine I made music for back in 2011. The PASV4 can make what sounds like to me a phase reversal switch I once had installed on an old bass I had years back. You can emulate a bagpipe type of sound on the melody side with it. Go to 5:30 in this video to hear what I did with it using bird sounds running through delay effects and a Bodran clip providing the rhythm.:

I've tried Sticks with the other two pickups and don't recall being able to get that sound. The Railboard might do it also. My Grand is one of the last Graphite, so I went with PASV4 vs the ACT-2. I had access to trying these out so I did have an informed decision.
