Post Frustrated with Lap Dawg + truss rod
I bought a stick with a Lap Dawg. It works great.... only problem is that it is in the way to adjust the truss rod... I live near the coast and have to adjust a bunch...

Anyone else have this issue?

I tried moving the belt hook, but it throws off my position standing or sitting and I am not super keen on any of the other spots. My lap dawg and belt hook are on the top two holes...

Wondering if anyone else has this issue, and what your solutions are/were...

I guess I can use the old dowel trick if thats the best solution.

Thanks in advance, ad

I take the dawg off when adjusting the truss. Once I could fit it in with the dawg attached, but it is easier to take it off.

Hmmmn, I'm frustrated with the "Lap Dawg" for a totally different reason! hahaha And it's not the Lap Dawg's fault really! Still, the Lap Dawg gets me by! I practice a lot, and it's inconvenient to always stand...

I find it interesting that you have to do so many truss adjustments, I don't live on the coast, but I DO live up in Northern Canada, and the weather fluctuates like crazy - humid, dry, freezing cold (really freezing cold) super hot, etc etc and I have to say that the Stick has been pretty much bulletproof - Really consistent as far as tuning and intonation goes. I really noticed a severe change when I changed tunings, but once it's set up, man it's golden! I've owned 3 sticks, two of which I still have... A daily truss rod adjustment seems unusual, especially on the Stick...

Another option might be the Dbro Holder perhaps?

I don't use a Lap Dawg. I find a wooden dowel that fits across my legs works great to put into the belt hook itself. I then lightly clamp my legs on the outside of the pickup block to hold the stick steady. I can play like this for hours. You can see plenty of examples of this in my videos.

It's a really effective method, and a lot easier on the thumbs; My LH thumb/hand is super tired from holding the stick up (I'd rest it on my shoulder like lots of guys do, but then range becomes an issue). I would like to get to a point where the thumbs are in play (like Boris) so I am definitely looking for a practice and performing solution for this. The Tag interface is one, and Emmett's chair looks like another. I have access to fabrication gear though so we'll see what I can come up with before I buy anything just yet...

I use a small strip of wood I cut off of some scrap we had left over from a remodeling project. I actually got the idea from one of Josh's videos where he pointed out you could even use a drumstick, but the extra length of what I use definitely makes it easier than a drumstick.

I've never played with a lap dawg so can't compare, but the homemade solution seems to work well enough.

Yeah, I messed with it a bit but there's some serious range issues, I have to be able to access the lower notes as easily as the high and middle ones so clamping the pickup with my legs doesn't really work for that. Also, the position that my belt hook is in isn't conducive to it really working... Not for me, anyways... Also, Steve Adelson has a way of holding it kind of like a guitar that "almost" works for me, but it's still also not quite for me - Still gotta use those thumbs to brace and support the instrument as I play. :D Bracing the instrument up against my shoulder doesn't work, as it makes for a good chunk of the instrument being difficult to access. I paid for those notes, I intend to play them! Again, standing isn't an issue... but I practice for a lot of hours in a day, and sometimes always standing isn't practical. All good, I'll find a way.
I will weld up a bracket/support this weekend similar to a Tag interface/Chapman chair and see if that gets me closer to what I like. And if so, I will order one of each from the dudes who make 'em.

I personally have never experienced the problems you're outlining, but to each their own

I find that lifting the arms of the dawg before trying to set the wrench generally does the trick.
