Compressor for the bass side of the Stick...
Can you guys recommend a compressor for the bass side of the Stick? Right now I'm thinking either the TC Electronics SpectraComp or the Xotic SP Compressor....
Thanks!!!

While I generally use the Compressors in the Helix, I do have a Spectracomp, and LOVE IT! Very easy to dial in a great sound!

I don't have either of these... never tested them... But... my preference would be the Spectracomp since it's a multiband compressor. The bass side of the stick covers a huge frequency range that I would think it's ideal to have separate control over different frequency range.

Re: Compressor for the bass side of the Stick...
I really liked the Xotic and regret having sold it. I used it for the melody side, but it would shine in any application with the Stick. I have used TCE's mini pedals, they are very compact, but I did not like having to dial upload sounds using their TonePrint tool. It's cool, yay there's an app for it, but I wanted more control.
The Xotic has just enough control, paired with a three position level switch and some internal dip switch options that make it more appealing. Also, how much tweaking are you going to do on a compressor the bass side, right? SO perhaps the Spectracomp is just the thing.
Oli turned me on the TCE Nova Dynamics pedal. I may replace that someday, but right now it does the trick.

Yep, it does it brilliantly. In any case, don't overcompress. A gentle compression tames the bass side nicely, without destroying the dynamics. Each finger is a compressor. Your hand is a compressor. Your arm is a compressor. Envoyé de mon iPad en utilisant Tapatalk

Re: Compressor for the bass side of the Stick...
Thanks for your input guys! I'm just looking for a little compression, not too much... just to even out certain notes...
mad_monk, I was just checking out the MXR... looks interesting...
Thanks again!!!

Wow, never knew this was multi band. I love Logic's multipressor on the NS Stick, really beefs up the low end. Always wanted that in hardware form. How many bands can you make on it? Logic goes up to five.

Re: Compressor for the bass side of the Stick...
The problem with the bass side tuned in 5ths is those strings go from fat to skinny real quick and anything short of a multi-band compressor is gonna have a tough time dealing with the physics of the mass of the strings requiring different compression from the lowest to the highest strings - especially with a 12 string Stick. In short, the huge bass strings need a completely different setting from the highest "chord" strings. My favorite thing would be a fully programmable 3 band compressor which only exists in my universe as a software plug-in on my recording software (Digital Performer). As far as a pedal that achieves those ends is the now discontinued and hard to come by TC Nova Dynamics pedal. I was lucky enough to find one and that's what I use. It's not as fine-tuneable as software plug-ins but it's the best I've found in hardware pedals that you'd use on a pedalboard. In my dreams I'd have 3 pickups on my Grand: one pickup and one compressor for the 3 bass strings and another pickup and a second compressor for the 3 high chord strings. The melody side strings tuned in 4ths - like a standard 6 string guitar - seem to be able to be able to be reproduced and tamed quite well by one 6 string pickup and a single channel compressor. Note to self: build a 3 pickup module and a 3 channel pedal board and play it thru 3 amps......
