Post Rock tune Logic ProX Tutorial/Demo
No Stick here hehe :D but I thought I'd share how I might slam together a quick jam using only LogicProX; No outside plugins. Just what comes with Logic and an emphasis on quick and dirty drums, bass, rhythm guitars and a couple of lead passes. Made it up as I went, so I hope y'all find it handy/entertaining. In particular, I thought it would be fun to demo some of the tones available in Logic proX for the guitarist... It has it's "own tone" to be sure...

Logic ProX rocks!

Thanks for making that video.
I love Logic ProX too!
So easy to get your ideas down.
Drummer is also available on Garageband... which comes free with a Mac.

The drummer function is definitely amazing. I believe it can listen to a track and adapt to it. I'm actually planning on using it as my main drum. It's like working with a drummer that I can control but still adds creativity and new dimensions to the song.

I have recently been working in the opposite direction of the traditional way of recording (Dums first)...
I practice with my pedalboard (don't use an amp so it also has Amp/Cab sims) with my bass side and melody sides summed into mono through my studio monitors. (I could practice with each side separated but I want to practice as close to a live situation as possible.) Bass and Melody sides have different effects. When I get an idea I turn on Logic and record a mono track to a click. Then I bring up a Drummer track and see what the drummers come up with.

This works for me because I am not a drummer and if I program anything it will almost always be kick/snare/kick/snare kind of thing and be very boring... Although drummer is more creative than that I do want to create the drums around the idea I have rather than the other way around. So before I change my idea to fit a drum pattern I get my idea down first and then tinker with the drummer to see what he/she comes up with.
I may just leave it at that point as a sketch or work on it some more and replay my bass side and melody sides separately.

For those who have not used drummer before...
It's not just rock drums. You can choose from several Genres (Rock, Alternative, Songwriter, R&B, Electronic and Hiphop). I am wanting to get out of the traditional rock sound so I am using electronic genre and it's really opened up my sound... So much fun!
Also, you can separate out the drums and mix like a traditional mix session, change out drum sounds, etc... There is a lot of manipulation that is possible.

Thanks again for posting!

Thanks for checking it out, dude! I am a big fan Of Logic, have been for awhile. And of course, Garageband doesn't suck. Insanely powerful tools that I probably would have killed for probably when I was just getting into music as a young person...

An interesting thing about "Drummer" in Logic ProX; There is a function called "Follow" in there, where it will basically revolve/reference it's groove around a midi track...

That means you could record your basic groove on NS/Stick/bass and then literally use pitch to midi to create a line with the rhythm, mute that track so that it isn't audible, but literally have it determine the "feel" of your drummer track. Very powerful.

Logic ProX rocks.

Super cool!
I don't think you need to pitch-to-midi either. Just choose the track.

So much on that program... So cool!

I wish Pro Tools had that feature. I'm a crappy drummer but I know what I like. I've played with it a little in Garageband and it's very cool. Maybe there's something similar for PT...

So I googled just that: "Logic Pro X Drummer in Pro Tools"; Good news and bad news.

The bad news (for PT users) is that there's really no equivalent for PT. There's loads of good programs for PT--I like NI's Studio Drummer and Session Drummer and also the Abbey Road Drummer(s)--but there's BFD2, studiodrummer, superior drummer, addictive drums, and others. But something that intuitively analyzes your track and makes a percussion track groove with it, none. -Ish.

But the good news, and news that I will seriously investigate, is that you can run Logic Pro X INSIDE a running PT on a MAC. I have Pro Tools, a couple of MACs, and a working copy of Logic Pro X just so I can export awesome Jayesskerr tracks. So I can use Logic Pro X Drummer and still keep all my PT goodness.

Here's where I read about it and where I will watch these two videos and try to get this to work. Cheers, Scott and Dean, for giving me the idea to search for this as a possibility! Sweet!

you could always actually use the logic version and route it to pro tools with this method:

Both videos relevant.
As for my personal opinion, the entirety of logic x is $200, comes with a shitload of stuff that sounds pretty fucking great, it's entire cost is cheaper than many of the "standard" drum plugins, that only comes with one kit. you get everything for $200 so it seems like a no brainer to me.

Dean, you're absolutely right; "Follow" works just fine with pitch tracks as well. Awesome. Saves me a step, but I'm not sure I fully trust it yet hahaha

Every DAW has it's own strengths and weaknesses, they all shine in their own way. As far as I know, there is nothing else out there that "autogenerates" a drum track the way Logic's "Drummer" patch does.

Now, I am also a VERY big fan of NI's Studio Drummer and Abbey Road kits; dragging and dropping midis or just playing the damn thing in is super cool. Toontrack's EZ drummer is extremely cool, and when it comes to using a set of Roland V-drums, Superior drummer is fantastic...

Hey Scott that was great , I'm coming over and your can teach me to play "far beyond the sun " by the swedish wonderkid. :D
Anyway, yes LOGIC X , really is an awesome piece of software, for the money its a complete steal and worth much more dare I say it.

Exploring it lots lately, I have been mostly a ProTools guy since it was at Version 2 ( showing my age) . As a history note though I did purchase the first release of Logic Audio post Notator way back when, we thought it was a monster but mostly wanted it for MIDI then. It was synced up to Multitracks with SMPTE.
Like you say the capability this stuff has now we would have climbed through flaming hoops of burning broken glass to get when younger, or I would have.
I attended a Distributors demo night at a hotel years ago and Gerhard Lengeling with another programmer from Emagic unveiled it on a big screen. When he timestretched audio right before our eyes we nearly all died and went to heaven, before complaining about the manual, he said the english seemed to have trouble understanding some things in a dry german accent! :D
So thanks for taking the time to put that together. But you're eating into my stick practice time.... :o
Cheers
B

The fine editing I can do with the flex-edit is so cool... just drag that one not that is a little late or early and it automatically stretches one side and shrinks the other side and that note is right on time! (I know it's cheating... but sometimes you just have to do it...)

Gawd, Bruce said smpte... I just had a damn flashback to the "days before the revolution"

smpte and fsk tape striping sucked.

I like to think that all of the technical stuff we can do these days with pitch and time could lead to really interesting creative choices, but sadly it IS used more often than not as a corrective tool.

Far Beyond the Sun... yep, I know it. I know it well hehehe :D

.....that era in studios when people started saying, OK, its not great ..but you can fix it , cant you ??

And the swedish wonderkid has been in Australia several times, I've seen him do that track, still love it, though my Yngwie phase ended years ago!
