Re: What's your favorite DAW and why?
It has been years since I used a DAW often. When I did, it was PreSonus Studio One. I like it a lot, but my plan to shift everything (apart from some games) to Linux has me looking at Bitwig (as a commercial alternative to Ardour).

Logic 10.x.x. Because it allows me to work fast. Because it allows me to set up my own preferences and key commands to streamline my workflow into using the DAW almost as my instrument (can't go into details... would take hours).
Other apps I use now and then are ProTools, Ableton Live, Cubase and Bitwig. But Logic remains my favorite.

(Bold added) Per, I know exactly what you mean. A person's choice and use of a DAW piece of software is no different than the personal relationship you have with any other musical instrument. You use it to express yourself musically. It is no less an instrument--and to me, the ULTIMATE instrument--that all else are subordinate to. When I use a different Digital Analog Workstation, I feel like it's someone else's guitar, or their own keyboard, and I don't know where all the bells and literal whistles are. Okay, that's a track window, there's a play and stop button, somewhere around here I should be able to add a plugin to this track, ...etc. But HOW THE HELL DO I QUANTITIZE???? Or, where's the fricking solo button? I majored in Digital Sound Synthesis (computer music) in music school, and that was our whole motto, creed, ethos, attitude, whatever: "The studio is the ultimate instrument!" I even had a T-shirt with that printed on it. (But we didn't know at the time that Emmett Chapman had been making a pretty good attempt at it with his Sticky Sticks!!!)

Yep, Logic is fast. I have a workflow with it that I can create quickly even though I have the attention span of a squirrel (Especially with Guitar).
I find that on Stick, I have less of a desire to 'record' my performances. I'd rather just perform my ideas and score the ones I like. Stick is like a big sketchbook...

Re: What's your favorite DAW and why?
I have a background in analog recording beginning in the mid 60s to about the mid 80s as an engineer for Warner Bros Records. When I first got into computers all they could do was sequencing and back then I had a little digital audio program called Sound Tools which was a kind of 2 track mixdown/mastering thing that you'd SMPTE up to a 24 track machine and it ran on early Mac IIci computers.
When I quit Warner Bros and built my own studio in 1985, I got into sequencing dance music with Cubase on an Atari 1040 ST computer and then later when they added 4 track audio capability on a late 80s Mac w/a sound card I jumped on that. Back then a 1 gig hard drive cost $600 at Fry's. I stayed with Cubase as it evolved to a full blown DAW as most other new guys jumped on Pro Tools after it evolved from Sound Tools. About 10 years ago after being around a studio with Digital Performer I switched to that because it was at least as elegant as Cubase but mainly because the interface hardware was much cheaper than Digidesign input hardware.
In 1998 or so I was finally able to put together 32 inputs of hardware into a Mac G4 for about $4K so I stuck with Mac/DP to this day. Step by step I upgraded computers and finally said bye bye to my 32 input AMEK console, got a bunch of outboard preamps and now my present studio Mac is an 8 core Intel Mac Pro. Since I had a lot of outside clients who still wanted Pro Tools, I eventually got that also plus Cubase and Logic just because some clients w/their own engineers want those.
I'm so used to DP now that's my go to DAW if I'm gonna be the one pushing buttons. To be honest Pro Tools always seemed kinda clunky and crude compared to the others and didn't have very sophisticated midi integration until a few years ago but it now does everything they all do and lotsa guys like the simplicity - so whatever floats yer boat. They're all good now.
