Boss SY-300 vs. Roland VG99 side by side
So I have both here and I've been spending hours comparing the two.
I understand one is processing one a synth, but both create new sounds and track what you are playing on the stick.
Sounds - VG99 wins hands down for me Ease of use - probably the sy300 but only because of the separate cable and their tendency to fail Tracking - VG99 much better with a good cable
The biggest draw back with the sy300 is "bleed" not so much as the synth sounds entering the bass side but when playing the bass side the low end oscillators on the melody are often triggered. Just not the clean separation you have with the Roland pickup.
So the Boss is going back. I'll deal with the 13 pin cable.

Hi Brett - have you experimented with the pitch ranges for the oscillators? You can set them so they don't trigger below a particular pitch - that might help with the bass side bleed.

Thanks Rob I figured you could tweek to lose all or most of the triggering but bottom line I greatly prefer the sounds on the vg. I traded in my gr 55 for the same reason hate the sounds.

lol VG99 wins hands down. I wish Roland would just re-release the VG... A crying shame that it's discontinued...

Not a sales pitch....if you want to hear the Stick through the VG99, I used this unit on every tune on my last two CDs . Hear it alone, with various guitar players, piano, percussion etc. "Sonic Imagination" CD uses many sound patches integrated into small ensemble performances

Re: Boss SY-300 vs. Roland VG99 side by side
Could be wrong but from the 88 past here are my thoughts. The VG-99 has no tracking issue, unless its pitch or an attempted synth patch. It is mainly fx not midi synth. That was a strength, super insane fx possibilitys and sound processing different strings I remember.
I had a dual boss pedal(yellow) with 13 pin connector from the 2000's and it was like no latency, just pretty bad synthy crack head sounds and sfx, still cool but nothing like the spender units.
Im still rocking that GI-20 now. Insane thought : I forgot: MIDI on bass side with some "gasp" iPhone mono synths like G2M and midimorphisis. Also midi guitar 2 on iPhone is sick, even poly that works if settings are perfect. All you need is a hipster phone and a cable adaptor and your in the money.

Here is some iPhone midi! It is quantized to all hell of course but you get a feel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpu9OQiq32A
