Post Roland KC-550 for Stick?
Hello fellow Stickists, I'm looking for a small, powerful amp for the Stick. I need it for a gig in a restaurant's patio with a trio consisting of Guitar, Drums and Stick. We play instrumental jazz/rock that is not very loud, but not too quiet either. I'm thinking of getting the Roland KC-550. Anyone here has any experience with this type of amp?

Thanks!!!

I do not recommend it, for a number of reasons which I outlined in a previous post:

Neither keyboard combo amps nor (especially) acoustic guitar amps are anywhere near as full range as you might expect. The design presumption of acoustic guitar amps is obvious, but what you may not know is that the "at real gigs, you run into the house PA" paradigm is far stronger in the keyboard world than it is even in the bass guitar world. As such, in addition to the inherent differences between keyboards and the Stick, keyboard amps are insufficient with regard to:
  1. input signal level
  2. input impedance
  3. EQ controls
  4. frequency response
  5. amplifier power
  6. accuracy of reproduction

These shortcomings are all the more damning in light of keyboard amps' size, weight, and cost.

Now, a few questions:
  1. What is your budget?
  2. What kind of pickup does your Stick have?
  3. What are your size and weight limits?

You know, I actually played through one of those this weekend at a house party, it sounded not too bad. I would prefer my other stuff, but I didn't have my other stuff; just my Railboard. My Grand with Pasv 4's would have sounded much better... Passable for a small gig? I think so. I might want to do some processing before the amp next time... (comp)

I also played through two Fender Twin Reverbs last week, it sounds quite excellent... Although, a Bassman and a Twin was really killer... Also, sounds good through a singleJC 120, 2 JC120's any of the Line6 stuff and Dual Axe-FX's, Marshalls, a couple of Mesa Stillettos...haha

Thanks for the replies. I guess I gotta keep hauling a bass and a guitar amp to sound the way I want.

What is your current rig? You might be able to sell parts of your current rig and add some cash to make a new rig.

Bose L1. 13.5 kilos. Good for your years. Good for your back.

For roughly the same money, he could build a fEARful 12/6/1 from a flat pack and use it with a Carvin BX250.

Weighing?

The cab would be 18.2kg, and the amp would be 1.5kg. The cab would have a flat response from roughly 40Hz to 5kHz (maybe 7kHz, it is nearly 3AM here), and the amp would give him significantly better tone shaping options. That combination could produce 102dB at 10 feet, with 6dB of headroom.

I am happy that you are happy with your gear, and I realize that the mic preamp in the Bose L1 Compact aids your singing; all I want to do is apprise people of the tremendous breadth of options available so that they can make the most of their budgets.

FWIW, a stickist friend of mine Valery Rovinsky mostly plays via a smaller Roland KC-150 and seems to be happy with it. I find it lacking some higher frequencies (just not bright enough in general) comparing to my tiny Phil Jones AAD AG-100, while bass and mids are ok.
