Post Outdoor Gigs: the Good, Bad, the Windy
A few observations regarding outdoor gigs after two very different experiences.

1. Old City Farm and Guild

The venue was an outdoor craft market in Washington, DC. The weather was not great - rainy and windy. The venue, unfortunately, provided no support whatsoever. Given the circumstances, I am glad I used a Zoom MS-1000BT as my sole effects pedal going directly into a Center Point Stereo Spacestation. I was pleased with the sound and I received great feedback from people on the other side of the market - they were able hear well but the sound was not overpowering.

2. Kentlands Oktoberfest

My home City of Gaithersburg did a great job of organizing music for Oktoberfest this past weekend. The organizer contacted me weeks in advance and gave me detailed information on where I could park, audio support, timing etc. I arrived on time and found a friendly, dedicated, and talented crew of two who helped me setup and conduct a soundcheck. The support made a huge difference in the sound and my ability to focus on playing.

For this gig, I used a Line 6 Helix pedal. I love the sound of the preamps and effects but almost as important is the workflow features.

With the Helix, you can adjust all effects on the fly, using only your feet. You hold a switch down to go into edit mode, select a labeled switch for the effect you want to adjust, select a labeled parameter for the effect, and use the foot pedal to adjust the parameter. Holding down another switch saves your changes. I was able to quickly adjust reverb mix percent, distortion gain, etc. during sound check and in between songs as needed without getting on my hands and knees to squint at a screen and twiddle knobs with my hands.

Great to hear about the gigs Jeremy, where else would we get to try out our new gar but at a gig!
Also great to hear how versatile you are with your pedals and being able to adjust settings on the fly.

The Helix has definitely been on my radar as a recovering HD500x user. I really appreciated the versatility of it and admired how others in our circle have used it to create such beautiful music, definitely worthy of an FHF session. How great would it be to have you and Randy and Steve Balough rant about the Helix?!

I've been wanting to have a dedicated session with you for about a year now - perhaps we can make time for both of these in the next few weeks?! It's crazy to think that the Stick is only one of MANY tools that you use to create?! The Eigenharp, Zen Drum, I am pretty sure I am just scratching the surface here.

Let me know if there is a Friday where you can spare an hour of time to hang out with us. Any chance you are going to be in Anaheim for NAMM? :D

Randy - thanks as always! We should trade Helix patches!

Gene - thanks! Let me look at the calendar and we can book a Friday. I have never been to a NAMM show but would love to go. I will talk it over with my better half!
