Another Open Mic with Surprise Saxophone.
Out again last night. 5 pieces and feeling reasonably confident now , well more confident, played at this place twice before but not for six months or so. Main thing was a french guy approached me just before starting about jamming with his Alto Sax, so whilst playing Im thinking what can I do thats suitable? Ah Ha , the ii, V, I in Dmaj, easy but nice chords and can get a groove going. So it was like an epiphany, the pressure was kind of off me partially , kept the time, added some simple things with right hand not to interfere with him and it was the most fun I've had in a long time. We went for about 5 minutes or so & I signalled the end. In recent months I've been thinking lots about doing stuff with other players so this was a real boost. I think it was a nice combination and a nice surprise to end my night out. Lots of open mics nearly every night of the week , but most are an hour or so a way , but worth the drive and effort I reckon. I can think back to my first couple now and its been worth the nerves & sweaty palms, just a million miles to go now, Tap On.

Been meaning to ask for a while, so now seems like an opportune moment... What do you take with you to an open-mike night? Amps, pedals, etc...

Re: Another Open Mic with Surprise Saxophone.
Hi Mate I go with the following. Two Radial DI's, one JDI Passive & a J48 Active Also take a little Behringher Dual channel battery active DI, purists would hate me for putting Behringher & Radial in the same bag. Pedal are simple just a Boss DD3 delay for the melody side and CE3 chorus very light on the Bass side sometimes. Also have a OD-3 overdrive in line for the solo on one song. Otherwise just the necessary cables and patch leads/spares. That usually covers all bases as at new places I'm sometimes not sure whats available though they sometimes ask prior. I usual check since I don't want to turn up and be gazumped by tech issues. No Amp, always direct into desk so far. Cheers , B

Excellent, thanks for that... I'm slowly summoning the courage to do likewise so it's handy to know what's best for the occasion. Looks like a decent DI box is on the shopping list.

You pulled out a good smash-glass-in-case-of-jam emergency with the "ii, V, I in Dmaj, easy but nice chords" and it "can get a groove going." It sure can and I'm sure it was awesome! Sounds like a great open mike night!

Re: Another Open Mic with Surprise Saxophone.
Yeah, confidence is key. Knowing where to go if you miss a note, drop a measure or hit a boldfaced clam - keep smiling and keep moving.
While we don't TRY to practice mistakes, some parts are harder than others, and inevitably, we miss the mark. It's all in the recovery AND playing with new players will force you to try new things. With the Stick, you have a whole new world open up when you are not liable for the melody.
I always enjoy hearing these updates and will post some notes from our Stick NAMM jam last week. Thanks again for posting.
