Post San Jose Open Mic
I played at an open mic on Wednesday. Called Cafe Lift. http://www.cafeliftsj.com/ It's a very young scene. Very positive and supportive. A wonderful atmosphere to get some experience playing in public. It's in a really nice Cafe at the Gateway Church in South San Jose/Morgan Hill area. I don't think anyone there was born before 1995...

I riffed off (improvised) of some song ideas I've been working on. I also sneaked in the verse and chorus of "Flashdance... What a Feeling" but I don't think anyone noticed the song... probably too young to know it...

I highly recommend this location for people looking for an open mic to perform at. This one is every month on the second Wednesday.
My plan is to play at a different open mic in a couple weeks.

Good Pic Dean, and good plan , I played at abour 25 open mics in 2016 across about 7 different venues, certainly a better player for it, having to deal with a multitude of varying circumstances. :D

It's a great low key way to get adjusted to playing in public.
Most of the people playing at open mics are acoustic guitar players so they just plug in the cable provided and go... but I used an effect pedal and it adds an extra layer of set up over the other players... trying to be as seamless as possible helps to keep nerves at bay and the impatient audience happy. It's also interesting to deal with all the noises that happen around you... all the people talking, chairs being dragged, the barista making a cappuccino,... A few weeks ago I found a youtube video that was just crowd noise and I played with that int he background. Years ago I used to play a lot and used to that noise... playing to that video helped me get back into that head space and remember what is to be expected...

For sure, I have had very similar experiences, fast pedal setups , tight schedules, and truckloads of background noise at times. :)

A weekly gig is great way to level up your performance and repertoire. I really like this picture too - good job Dean.

Good job Dean......looks like you pare down your setup a bit when you play out. As I recall you use the Pod HD usually.....kind of a drag hauling that stuff around for a few tunes....

cheers,
kev

I've paired down to the MOD Duo. I have a couple pedals that I would use also but for the open mic I just use the Duo.
I haven't been singing so no vocal effects...
