Dear friends and well-met acquaintances, Gene and I have reunited to get geeky with Free Hands Friday. This episode covers the more “normal” uses of the K-Mix and teases future weirdness. I hope that you will all forgive my poor lighting and enjoy:

Yes! Finally. Big thanks to Rob for patience while we got this setup.

Audio for this session was run entirely from the K-Mix. Such an impressive small board. A bit (much) more than my Mackie Mix-8, which comes in at $79.95, the K-mix is stacked with a deep set of features.

If you're using it as standalone mixer

Can you still use the effects?

Boaz, we'll do a bit coming up on the onboard effects. They're decent, but definitely shy of Strymon type quality.

Gene and Rob great job with this video. There are not a lot of videos on the k mix mixer out in the inter web. I know because I’ve looked My issue is Keith Mcmillen needs to do more extensive videos on their products. You guy are filling that void. There is so much this awesome mixer can do so maybe that’s why there are not a lot of videos on it. KM does document their stuff really well so reading manual helps a lot but I love seeing how people actually do things versus reading about how to do it.

I use this mixer constantly. I go to a jam with friends and they all plug in and away we go. Pretty easy. When I like what we be done I can save it as a preset. You can save 12 presets on the mixer so when I go home I push preset one for me and preset two when I go jam. Very handy.

Gene I can’t wait to hear your future stick learn videos because we can get a direct feed of what your doing and not thru the room mic. Way better quality.

Features I love are the VU meter and the input trim. (And many others) I’m not a sound mixing guru so I have to be careful not to clip signals with too much input trim but at least I can set the input values so they are consistent before sending them out to the speakers.

I always intended on using the mix also as a aggdevice so that video conferencing could be at its highest quality level. Ie no room echo and computer mic inputs for the sound. I have to figure this out but looks like you guy have as this sounds great.

Boaz. The leds on the mixer are very bright so you don’t have to use a computer to adjust any parameters but it’s just so much easier and convenient using a computer but you don’t need one. When adjusting the rotaries for example you can see exactly where the leds are pointing.

I send my line 1 and 2 to aux 3 so i can add in my effects chain. From there the effects come into inputs 3 and 4 so I can blend the dry and wet signal . When using this to record my videos Mad World and And I Love Her I use the K mix ( as an audio interface) to go to Logic Pro and have the the four inputs 1 thru 4 set up as inputs 1 Thur 4 in my DAW. Super easy too.

I also intended on using my Keith Mcmillen Soft step 2 to control the volume faders on the K Mix so I don’t have to bend over during a gig to adjust volumes and such. Another great feature of the midi side of this mixer.

Anyway looking forward to hearing the dynamic duo of Gene and Rob futher discuss this awesome mixer. I know I’ll learn more as Rob s technical knowledge is huge. (And yours too Gene)

Hey Rob. On my computer I can make an aggregate device. I assume this is just telling the computer I will use the kind instead of the computers mic and outputs. If people who were to be musical guests could do this I assume we would hear them clearly and not garbled as thru their computer mic’s. You both sort of touched on this a bit but not sure if that’s what you did using the K mix. You can maybe talk about that. Tips for setting input trim or gain on each channel. Seemed to me Genes input trim was a touch low as his stick was much quieter than your voices.

I can’t think of much else st this point. It’s a cool tool

You can maybe touch on those in the next video. Also I never understood what impedance was and how to use it for maximum benefit.
